Irfan and Usman Awarded Maiden Pakistan Call-ups for New Zealand Series

Karachi, Muhammad Irfan Khan and Usman Khan have been named in Pakistan’s 17-player squad for the upcoming T20I series against New Zealand, marking their first call-ups to the national team after standout performances in the HBL Pakistan Super League.

According to Pakistan Cricket Board, the series, set to take place in Rawalpindi and Lahore from April 18-27, will feature five T20Is. Irfan Khan, known for his skills as a middle-order batter, and Usman Khan, a dynamic opener, have made significant impressions to earn their spots in the squad.

Irfan, who played for Karachi Kings, emerged as the Emerging Player and Best Fielder of the HBL PSL 9, amassing 171 runs at a strike rate of 140.16. Usman Khan’s remarkable contributions for Multan Sultans, including two centuries and two half-centuries in the latest season, have solidified his position as a formidable batsman.

The squad also sees the return of experienced players Imad Wasim and Mohammad Amir, following their comebacks from retirement, adding depth and experience to the team. Wrist spinner Abrar Ahmed has been included as well, aiming to make an impact with his unique bowling style.

The selection committee, alongside captain Babar Azam and interim head coach, has finalized the squad with an eye on the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, emphasizing the importance of this series in their preparations. The team management is keen on utilizing this opportunity to refine their strategies and bolster their squad ahead of the World Cup.
