Karachi: The ports and shipping sector in Pakistan is in dire need of improvement to boost the nation’s economy, said Altaf Shakoor, Chairman of the Pasban Democratic Party (PDP), during a recent address. Shakoor emphasized that despite Pakistan’s extensive coastline and major ports in Karachi and Gwadar, the sector remains underdeveloped due to ineffective government policies.
Shakoor highlighted those smaller countries like Denmark and Singapore have become global leaders in the shipping industry by prioritizing strategic policies and government support. Denmark, for instance, boasts a robust maritime ecosystem and is home to leading shipping companies, all fostered by favorable tax policies and investments in sustainable technologies. Similarly, Singapore has established itself as a maritime powerhouse with business-friendly policies and a focus on digital innovation, propelling it to become the world’s busiest transshipment hub.
Shakoor proposed that Pakistan could emulate these models, transforming its ports into world-class hubs. He identified outdated equipment, shallow drafts, and inefficiencies as major challenges that need addressing. By deepening channels, adopting AI-powered technologies, and establishing specialized terminals, Pakistan could enhance its port operations significantly.
Additionally, Shakoor advocated for the development of marine engineering universities and the maintenance of pollution-free port districts to further support the sector’s growth. He stressed the importance of offering incentives and duty-free policies to attract global maritime firms and increase transshipment capabilities, drawing parallels with successful strategies employed by ports in Dubai and China.
Shakoor’s comments underline the potential for economic transformation through targeted improvements in Pakistan’s ports and shipping sector, urging the government to adopt global best practices and leverage the country’s strategic advantages.
