Islamabad: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Friday gave the Pakistani government a four-week deadline to formulate a prisoner transfer agreement that could facilitate the return of Dr. Aafia Siddiqui to Pakistan. The court expects a report on this agreement at the next hearing.
According to Aafia Movement, The case, presided over by Justice Sardar Ejaz Ishaque Khan, saw significant developments as the government was urged to finalize an agreement allowing prisoners sentenced abroad to serve their remaining terms in their home country. Imran Shafique, The lawyer for Dr. Fowzia Siddiqui, briefed the media about the proceedings and the historical context of such requests by the Pakistani government.
Shafique highlighted past discussions on similar agreements, noting that previous efforts were stalled due to legal advisements against them, deemed not in Pakistan’s interest. However, The current Attorney General has reinitiated talks, involving all relevant stakeholders, to reach a feasible solution for Dr. Siddiqui’s transfer within the newly stipulated timeframe.
The court has warned of consequences if the government fails to present the proposed agreement at the subsequent hearing, underscoring the urgency and importance of this matter.
