Karachi: The Attorney General of Pakistan, Mansoor Usman Awan, has committed to serious efforts towards the early release of Dr. Aafia Siddiqui, as stated during a session at the Islamabad High Court. The hearing, led by Justice Sardar Ijaz Ishaq Khan, addressed the constitutional petition regarding Dr. Siddiqui’s release, which was attended by former Senator Mushtaq Ahmed Khan and other notable figures.
According to Aafia Movement, the discussion revealed that three main strategies are under consideration for Siddiqui’s release. The Attorney General noted that the current U.S. President’s term allows for pardons during November to January, a critical period for Siddiqui’s release. Siddiqui’s American lawyer, Clive Smith, has prepared a detailed petition to support a request for clemency, which the Pakistani government plans to endorse.
Further efforts include a diplomatic push by Pakistan’s Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister during their upcoming U.S. visit, aiming to facilitate Siddiqui’s release on compassionate grounds. Additionally, an amicus brief is being prepared for submission to U.S. courts to support her release. The Attorney General has also highlighted ongoing discussions about a prisoner exchange agreement, giving the matter a three-week timeline for further development.
The next court hearing is scheduled for October 30, underscoring the urgency and critical nature of the upcoming months in Siddiqui’s case. The nation’s involvement is deemed crucial during this pivotal period.
