Election Tribunals Decide 37 Percent of Petitions Following General Elections

ISLAMABAD: Election tribunals have resolved 37 percent of the petitions filed regarding the 2024 General Elections, according to a report by the Free and Fair Election Network (FAFEN). Between February 1 and April 20, 2025, 24 petitions were decided, increasing the total to 136 out of 372 petitions being tracked across four provinces.

In Punjab, 21 petitions were resolved, with two from Balochistan and one from Sindh. Lahore’s tribunals decided eight cases, Rawalpindi seven, and Bahawalpur six. Quetta’s tribunals settled two cases, while Karachi’s tribunal resolved one. No decisions were reported from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa during this period.

Despite a rise in decisions in Punjab, the overall pace remains sluggish. Four tribunals, including two in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, one in Punjab, and Islamabad’s sole tribunal, were largely inactive.

Balochistan’s tribunals have decided 43 of 51 petitions, representing an 83 percent resolution rate. Punjab has resolved 66 of 192 petitions (34 percent), Sindh 18 of 83 (22 percent), and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa nine of 42 (21 percent).

For National Assembly constituencies, 33 of 124 petitions have been decided, with 19 from Punjab and eight from Balochistan. For Provincial Assemblies, 103 of 248 petitions were concluded, including 47 from Punjab and 35 from Balochistan.

Of the 136 petitions resolved, 133 were dismissed, and three accepted. Dismissal reasons included non-maintainability and unproven allegations. Nine petitions were withdrawn, and 14 dismissed for non-prosecution. FAFEN is still awaiting tribunal decisions for 34 dismissed petitions.
