Dr. Fawzia Siddiqui Returns to Karachi After Hindered Visit to Sister in U.S. Prison

Karachi, Dr. Fawzia Siddiqui, Chairperson of Aafia Movement and President of Epilepsy Foundation Pakistan, is set to return home today after a challenging visit to the United States to meet her sister, Dr. Aafia Siddiqui, who is incarcerated in an American jail. The visit was marred by unexpected obstacles, including an initially denied meeting and a subsequent encounter that was less than satisfactory, leading to Dr. Fawzia Siddiqui’s prompt return.

According to Aafia Movement, Dr. Fawzia Siddiqui departed from Houston, America, on Tuesday evening, and her flight is scheduled to reach Karachi Airport tonight. Supporters of the Aafia Movement are expected to welcome her at the airport. Dr. Fawzia Siddiqui’s visit to the U.S. was intended for a face-to-face meeting with her sister at FMC Carswell Jail on December 2 and 3. However, the prison authorities initially prevented the meeting, citing the loss of a key, leading to a delayed and stressful encounter. Dr. Aafia Siddiqui was found in a deteriorating condition, with communication hindered by a thick glass wall, despite promises of a social visit.

The Islamabad High Court, responding to an urgent application filed by Dr. Fawzia Siddiqui’s lawyer, held a special hearing on December 6. The court directed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to facilitate a meeting between the two sisters. Despite these efforts, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Pakistani Consulate were unable to arrange a satisfactory meeting.

Upon her arrival at Karachi Airport, Dr. Fawzia Siddiqui is expected to brief the media about her visit to America and the challenges she faced in attempting to meet her sister. The situation has garnered significant attention, highlighting the ongoing efforts of the Aafia Movement in supporting Dr. Aafia Siddiqui.
