Chairman PPP and Foreign Minister of Pakistan Bilawal Bhutto Zardari’s message on #WorldOceansDay

Islamabad, June 07, 2022 (PPI-OT):Chairman Pakistan Peoples Party and Foreign Minister of Pakistan Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has said that reports that oceans have witnessed 90 per cent depletion of big fish populations and destruction of 50pc coral reefs due to reckless human activities are highly alarming for the world community, including Pakistan.

In his message on the World Oceans Day being observed on Wednesday around the world under the aegis of the United Nations, the Pakistani Foreign Minister pointed out that oceans produce 50 percent of planet’s oxygen and absorb 30 per cent of carbon dioxide produced by human.

Bilawal Bhutto Zardari said that oceans are eroding delta regions at a fast pace due to the non-judicious controls on waters by upper riparian building unnatural dams and amending natural water ways. According to a research, 2.4 million acres of the Indus delta has been invaded by the sea and it is feared that if the present rate of sea erosion continues, the whole of Shah Bunder tehsil will vanish by 2035 and the sea will reach Thatta city by 2050.

PPP Chairman stressed that international community and its ocean experts should sit together to save the oceans biodiversity and protect it from reckless destruction by human activities. He assured that Pakistan will play its role as a responsible state in promoting and highlighting the UN theme “Revitalisation: Collective Action for the Ocean”.
