Brief on “Workshop on Intellectual Property Rights: Drafting and Filing of Patent Applications” at National University of Medical Sciences 

Rawalpindi, June 28, 2022 (PPI-OT):Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs) play a key role in strengthening knowledge-based economy of a country. Protecting and exploiting inventions through IPRs has thus become very crucial. In this context, NUMS-Office of Research Innovation and Commercialization (ORIC) has arranged a one-day capacity building workshop titled “Intellectual Property Rights: Drafting and Filing of Patent Application” at National University of Medical Sciences, Islamabad, on Wednesday, 15 June 2022 at 1015 Hrs. Ms. Zubia Hassan, Controller of Patents and Registrar of Designs at Intellectual Property Organization (IPO) of Pakistan, was the key-note speaker for the said event. She has vast knowledge and experience in the subject field and has been a part of IPO, Pakistan since 2006 while serving at multiple positions.

The workshop was enthusiastically attended by the faculty members and researchers from NUMS Faculty of Multidisciplinary Studies. Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, Army Medical College (AMC) and Armed Forces Post Graduate Medical Institute (AFPGMI). Honourable Dean Faculty of Multidisciplinary Studies, Prof Dr Aisha Mohyuddin opened the session with her remarks followed by the welcome note and introduction of the distinguished guest to the audience by the Assistant Director ORIC, Mr Aqeel Yunus. Moreover, the Director ORIC, Dr Awais e Siraj, apprised the participants on the significance of the IPRs and encouraged the faculty for enhancing the number of patent applications under the emblem of NUMS.

The workshop proved to be a great knowledge sharing opportunity for all the participants on the subject topic. After this workshop, the participants were able to comprehend the important concepts of copyright and IP rights. They also got detailed insights into the process of filing and submissions. This workshop brought a positive attitude in participants toward publishing and commercialization of patents. It will help develop a more focused outlook in the faculty and researchers towards the benefits of patent and licensing.
