Bangladesh High Commissioner to Pakistan visits LUMS

Lahore, December 10, 2021 (PPI-OT):In the spirit of collaboration between Pakistan and Bangladesh, His Excellency High Commissioner Ruhul Alam Siddique along with his wife Mrs. Shamshad Ara Khanum visited LUMS on Friday, December 3, 2021. Welcomed by LUMS leadership, including Rector, Mr. Shahid Hussain; Vice Chancellor, Dr. Arshad Ahmad; and Director, Office of Advancement, Ms. Nuzhat Kamran, High Commissioner Siddique expressed great excitement upon engaging with LUMS and discussing possible avenues of partnership.

Mr. Hussain reflected on how LUMS has been instrumental in changing the landscape of higher education in Pakistan. “We have learned from others and we are happy to share whatever we know”, he said. With His Excellency rather interested in the model that LUMS is following, Ms. Kamran presented a detailed overview of the University, sharing insights on everything from the Learning Without Borders philosophy and the variety of academic programmes offered, to the range of centres housed at LUMS and the cutting-edge research currently underway.

A brief on the Centre for Water Informatics and Technology (WIT) and its work on water management, smart agriculture and addressing water scarcity particularly caught the High Commissioner’s eye. “This is a very interesting area of study and the Centre for WIT has quite an interesting name for me because Bangladesh is a country that is full of water and that is going to be an issue in the rest of the world in the near future,” he said.

Details on the University’s efforts towards accessible education along with their various international exchange partnerships were also shared, and the High Commissioner expressed an interest in building such links with institutions in Bangladesh also. “We are very enthusiastic about collaboration and exchange,” said Dr. Ahmad.

The High Commissioner’s visit included a tour of the National Incubation Centre Lahore (NICL) at LUMS and an opportunity to briefly interact with Founding Pro Chancellor, Syed Babar Ali. This visit and meeting opened doors to many possibilities of active collaboration in the near future.
