Australia Rallies Against Pakistan in Women’s World Cup Clash

COLOMBO: Australia secured a strong position in the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 match against Pakistan, thanks to impressive performances by Beth Mooney and the opening duo of Kim Garth and Megan Schutt. The defending champions posted a competitive total of 221 runs, with Mooney’s century and a record-breaking ninth-wicket partnership setting the stage for their innings.

Australia, coming off a washed-out match against Sri Lanka, faced early challenges after opting to bat first. Pakistan’s bowlers, led by Nashra Sandhu and Rameen Shamim, made significant inroads. Sandhu claimed three wickets, disrupting Australia’s top order, while Shamim added two more to the tally.

Despite early setbacks, Mooney anchored the innings with a commanding 109 runs, marking her first century in the Women’s Cricket World Cup. She was supported by Alana King, who contributed a valuable 51 runs. Their combined effort not only stabilized the innings but also set a new record for the highest ninth-wicket partnership in Women’s ODI history.

In response, Pakistan started their chase with determination. However, Australia’s bowling attack, spearheaded by Garth and Schutt, quickly seized control. The duo claimed four wickets early in the innings, putting Pakistan on the back foot.

This match is crucial for Pakistan, who are seeking their first victory in the tournament after two consecutive losses. Conversely, Australia aims to build on their opening win against New Zealand.

The outcome of this encounter in Colombo will be pivotal for both teams as they navigate the challenges of the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup.
