Karachi: The Arts Council of Pakistan Karachi, in collaboration with the Patient Welfare Association, conducted a seminar titled “Aatiya-e-Ummid” (Gift of Hope) alongside a blood donation camp, focusing on raising awareness about thalassemia and the importance of blood donation.
According to Arts Council of Pakistan Karachi, the event took place at the Haseena Moin Hall and featured notable speakers such as Dr. Qaisar Sajjad, Chairman of the Medical and Social Welfare Committee, and other specialists in hematology, oncology, gastroenterology, and women’s health. The seminar served to enlighten attendees about various health issues, debunk myths surrounding blood donation, and discuss the religious and ethical implications of donating blood.
Dr. Qaisar Sajjad highlighted the dual role of the Arts Council in cultural and health-related activities, noting the council’s contributions during past crises and its ongoing health initiatives, including a free clinic for council members. Dr. Noor ul Ain and Dr. Uzma Imam discussed the medical prerequisites for blood donations and the specific needs of cancer patients, respectively. Prof. Dr. Riffat Jaleel advocated for premarital thalassemia testing to prevent the genetic disorder, and Dr. Huma Qureshi called for better implementation of the Thalassemia Act in Sindh to prevent disease transmission through transfusions.
The blood donation drive, which lasted from 11 AM to 5 PM, saw a significant turnout, underscoring the community’s commitment to contributing to the health of fellow citizens. The event concluded with the Arts Council recognizing Dr. Sajjad’s contributions with a commemorative shield.
