Al-Shifa Trust Expands Free Eye Care Services in Remote Gilgit-Baltistan

GILGIT: Al-Shifa Trust, a notable provider of eye care services in Pakistan, has partnered with the Independent Living Centre, a non-governmental organization focused on disability support in Gilgit-Baltistan, to expand access to free eye care services in this remote region.

The partnership facilitates daily transportation of 15 patients to Al-Shifa Eye Hospital in Gilgit, where they receive free eye examinations, diagnostics, medication, and surgical treatment. The initiative aims to enhance eye health and promote inclusivity for marginalized individuals.

Mr. Amjad Nadeem, CEO of the Independent Living Centre, emphasized the importance of providing tangible healthcare access alongside advocacy efforts to empower individuals with disabilities. The collaboration with Al-Shifa Trust is a step towards achieving this goal.

Despite ongoing construction, the Gilgit branch of Al-Shifa Trust is already offering essential services to the local population. Maj. Gen. (Retd) Rehmat Khan, President of Al-Shifa Trust, highlighted that the facility also caters to patients with hearing and speech impairments, providing tailored support and transportation.

Dr. Qaim Ali Khan and Dr. Lubna lead the eye care services in Gilgit, performing advanced procedures at no cost. The need for such services is critical, as approximately 9 million people in Pakistan suffer from vision impairment, with blindness more prevalent in females than males. Without further interventions, the burden of vision loss is expected to rise due to population growth and ageing.

Maj. Gen. (Retd) Khan noted that an estimated 85.5% of blindness cases are avoidable, with cataracts being the most significant cause. Across all Al-Shifa hospitals, about 80% of patients receive free treatment. A new branch in Lahore is under development, set to begin operations by 2027, aiming to expand the Trust’s reach.

He reaffirmed Al-Shifa Trust’s mission to eliminate preventable blindness and alleviate eye disease burdens, particularly among underserved populations. The initiative has been met with gratitude from patients, underscoring the impact of the Trust’s services.

This partnership exemplifies how collaborative efforts can bridge healthcare gaps in remote regions, offering renewed hope to communities lacking access to quality eye care.
