PPP Sindh President Criticizes Federal Government Over Constitutional Amendment and KP Governor’s Rule

Karachi: Nisar Ahmed Khuhro, the Pakistan Peoples Party Sindh President, has criticized the federal government's ability to pass the 28th Constitutional Amendment, citing their lack of a two-thirds majority in Parliament. According to Pakistan Peoples Party, Khuhro expressed concerns that the debate over the amendment could weaken the country's future. He also addressed the imposition of governor's rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, stating it was not intended to be a long-term measure and that negotiations with political parties could lead to its conclusion.

Khuhro made these remarks during a press conference held in the Sindh Assembly's committee room. He emphasized that without the required parliamentary majority, any discussion on the constitutional amendment was premature and could potentially destabilize the nation. He also highlighted that even if the PML-N federal government secured support from its allies, it would still fall short of the necessary majority to move forward with the amendment.

Regarding the governor's rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Khuhro noted that the situation was not new and had been an ongoing issue in the province. He explained that the decision for the governor's rule was made following constitutional guidelines when the law and order situation exceeded acceptable limits. Although the President signed the summary for governor's rule based on the federal cabinet's approval, Khuhro emphasized that the government remained open to discussions with political parties to address terrorism in the province, which could lead to an end to the governor's rule.

Khuhro also commented on the historical context of governor's rule in Pakistan and criticized the previous government's negotiations with the Taliban. He mentioned that Maulana Fazlur Rehman had been approached to mediate due to his political experience and stance against terrorism.

On a separate note, Khuhro addressed the topic of creating new provinces, reiterating the constitutional requirements for such actions. He noted that the Sindh Assembly had passed a resolution opposing any changes to the province's boundaries and suggested that new provinces should be considered in other regions like Gilgit and Punjab if their assemblies supported it.

In a notable development at the press conference, Aiman Saleem, the daughter of cricketer Saleem Yousuf, announced her decision to join the Pakistan Peoples Party. She expressed her confidence in the party's leadership and her commitment to working for the country's betterment through the PPP platform. Khuhro welcomed her into the party, highlighting the PPP's role in empowering women.
