Lahore: The University of Engineering and Technology (UET) Lahore has inaugurated a Sustainable Urban Drainage System (SuDS) pilot project, a significant step towards sustainable water management. The initiative, inaugurated by Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Shahid Munir, represents a major investment of Rs. 7.5 million and underscores the university's commitment to environmental sustainability and climate resilience.
According to University of Engineering and Technology, the project, developed in collaboration with The Urban Unit Punjab, spans approximately 8,000 square feet and aims to address urban water challenges through sustainable infrastructure and research-driven innovation. The project features two core technologies: permeable pavements, designed to allow rainwater infiltration to reduce surface runoff, and groundwater recharge infrastructure, which helps replenish groundwater levels by channeling rainwater underground.
The project serves as a platform for applied research and engineering innovation, focusing on developing sustainable solutions to urban flooding and groundwater depletion. Under the leadership of Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Shahid Munir, UET Lahore is enhancing its role as a center for innovation, academic excellence, and collaborative efforts. This partnership between CEWRE, UET Lahore, and The Urban Unit Punjab illustrates how academia and public-sector institutions can collaboratively address Pakistan's environmental challenges.
