Sargodha: The Faculty of Agriculture at the University of Sargodha organized an awareness walk in observance of World Cotton Day 2026, emphasizing the pivotal role of cotton in Pakistan's agricultural and economic sectors. Led by Dean Faculty of Agriculture Prof. Dr. Muhammad Ashraf, the event saw participation from faculty members including Principal College of Agriculture Prof. Dr. Ijaz Rasool Noorka, Prof. Dr. Athar Nadeem, and a substantial number of students.
According to the University of Sargodha, the speakers underscored cotton's status as a cornerstone of Pakistan's agriculture, supporting millions of farming households and supplying essential raw materials to the textile industry. They pointed out that the crop significantly contributes to rural employment, industrial activities, exports, and the broader agricultural value chain. The theme for this year's observance, "Cotton for Good: Building Prosperity through Trade, Transformation and Partnership," highlighted the necessity for collaboration and innovation within the cotton value chain.
Speakers also addressed the challenges faced by Pakistan's cotton production, such as climate change, water shortages, pest attacks, declining productivity, and quality issues. They advocated for the adoption of research-based farming practices, quality seeds, efficient water usage, improved crop management, and modern technologies to enhance productivity and bolster the country's cotton sector. The walk concluded with appeals for heightened awareness among students and farmers regarding sustainable cotton production and its importance to Pakistan's agricultural economy.
