KARACHI: The Karachi Circular Railway (KCR) project remains overlooked by both federal and provincial authorities, causing significant inconvenience for the city's commuters, according to Altaf Shakoor, Chairman of the Pasban Democratic Party (PDP). Shakoor highlighted the ongoing neglect of the crucial transportation initiative during a statement on Monday, emphasizing the need for urgent attention and action to revitalize the system.
According to Pasban Democratic Party, Shakoor noted that while major metropolises worldwide have established underground metro systems, Karachi lacks even a functioning surface rail-based commuting network. He pointed to the success of Lahore's Orange Line train service as a contrast to Karachi's neglected public transport sector. Shakoor criticized Pakistan Railways for its apparent disinterest in reviving the once profitable KCR service.
Shakoor argued that with existing infrastructure such as rail tracks and stations in place, the restoration of local train services on the KCR could be achieved swiftly with necessary repairs. He cited the example of Indian cities, where local train systems are integral to urban economies, serving millions of commuters daily. According to Shakoor, Karachi's urban economy could see substantial benefits from a modernized commuting system like the KCR.
The PDP leader called on Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, and Railway Minister Hanif Abbasi to address the issue and initiate measures for the KCR's revival.
