ISLAMABAD: First Lady of Pakistan, Bibi Aseefa Bhutto Zardari, welcomed the Ethiopian Ambassador, Dr. Jemal Beker Abdula, for a farewell meeting at the Aiwan-e-Sadr, highlighting the longstanding ties between Pakistan and Ethiopia and exploring future cooperation opportunities.
During the meeting, the First Lady acknowledged the Ambassador’s efforts in fostering ties between the two nations. She referenced the historic visit of Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto to Ethiopia, emphasizing the need to reinforce the relationship rooted in mutual respect and solidarity since the era of King Nejashi.
Bibi Aseefa Bhutto Zardari addressed Pakistan’s environmental challenges, noting ongoing reconstruction and plantation efforts for flood-stricken areas. She suggested collaboration with Ethiopia in climate-smart agriculture and renewable energy, drawing from Ethiopia’s reforestation successes.
The First Lady congratulated Ethiopia on its BRICS membership and reiterated Pakistan’s dedication to enhancing bilateral cooperation in trade, investment, and climate initiatives. She highlighted economic developments, such as the Bilateral Trade Agreement and the upcoming Single Country Exhibition in Addis Ababa, as well as the resumption of direct flights between Karachi and Addis Ababa.
Ambassador Abdula expressed gratitude for the First Lady’s contributions to promoting Pakistan’s image and strengthening bilateral relations. He emphasized Ethiopia’s emergence as a promising market and discussed opportunities for trade and investment in Africa. He also invited the First Lady to Ethiopia to discuss collaborative efforts with the Ethiopian First Lady on social and environmental issues.
The meeting concluded with the First Lady wishing the Ambassador success in his future roles and expressing optimism for the continued growth of the partnership between the two countries. Senator Sherry Rehman attended the meeting as well.
