University of Sargodha Tackles Drug Abuse with Campus-Wide Campaigns

Sargodha: The University of Sargodha (UoS) recently observed the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking with a series of awareness initiatives designed to inform students and staff about the dangers of substance abuse and the importance of maintaining a drug-free academic environment.

This observance aligns with a global effort led by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) to promote action and cooperation toward eradicating drug abuse. Consistent with this year’s theme, “The evidence is clear: invest in prevention,” the university’s activities centered on preventive education, medical insight, and institutional responsibility.

A focal point of the campaign was a special live broadcast on the university’s Campus Radio FM 98.2. The program featured expert guests, including Dr. Mahmood-ul-Hasan, Director of Students Affairs; Dr. Ayesha Fawad, University Medical Officer; and Daim Iqbal, Assistant Registrar.

During the broadcast, Dr. Mahmood-ul-Hasan highlighted the university’s zero-tolerance policy towards drug abuse, stating their commitment to a safe and productive academic environment. He emphasized that awareness is a crucial step in prevention, and the campaign is part of ongoing efforts.

Dr. Ayesha Fawad addressed the medical implications of drug abuse, noting the severe damage to vital organs and the risk of psychological disorders. She stressed the vulnerability of youth and the need for education on the irreversible consequences of substance abuse.

Mr. Daim Iqbal added that the university is also promoting peer support networks to help identify and rehabilitate individuals at risk.

Beyond the radio program, the university launched a campus-wide visual awareness campaign. Anti-drug banners, posters, and hoardings were strategically placed across the campus, including in faculty buildings, hostels, libraries, and cafeterias.
