Lahore: The South Asia Olympic Council (SAOC) has solidified critical plans for the 14th South Asian Games, slated for January 2026. The event will unfold across Lahore, Faisalabad, and Islamabad, following a productive meeting of the SAOC Executive Committee in Lahore.
According to a statement by Pakistan Olympic Association, the meeting, presided over by Mr. Arif Saeed, President of both SAOC and the National Olympic Committee (NOC) Pakistan, was a demonstration of regional commitment to advancing sports and fostering unity across South Asia. The gathering included representatives from NOCs of Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan, emphasizing collaborative efforts among these nations.
The meeting culminated in several key decisions, including finalizing the event schedule for the Games from January 23 to 31, 2026. The sports program, comprising 27 disciplines, was also approved, with further details on events expected by March 2025.
A significant outcome was the establishment of a committee to review the SAOC Constitution to ensure alignment with the Olympic Council of Asia. Additionally, the SAOC Secretariat will extend invitations to OCA representatives for all future meetings, aiming to benefit from their expertise.
Confirmed sports for the Games include Aquatics, Archery, Athletics, and several others, with Rowing poised for inclusion pending endorsement. These decisions reflect the region’s ambition to host a comprehensive and inclusive sporting event.
Mr. Arif Saeed expressed gratitude towards all participating NOCs for their dedication, highlighting the instrumental support from Mr. Zahoor Ahmed Chaudhry, Federal Secretary Sports. He also acknowledged Pakistan’s Prime Minister, Mian Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, for his leadership in facilitating the Games’ preparation.
