Bilawal Bhutto Zardari Advocates for Constitutional Court to Protect Prime Ministers

Karachi: Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has reiterated his commitment to judicial reforms, emphasizing the establishment of a constitutional court to safeguard elected prime ministers from unjust treatment. Speaking at the Sindh High Court Bar Association, he outlined a vision for a reformed judicial system that ensures timely justice and equitable representation across provinces.

According to Pakistan Peoples Party, Chairman Bhutto Zardari detailed his plans during an address where he linked his party’s historical struggles against authoritarianism to the present need for constitutional safeguards. He highlighted the necessity of a constitutional court that would feature equal representation from all provinces, with the position of Chief Justice rotating among them. His advocacy for this court stems from past grievances, including the injustices faced by his mother, former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto.

During his speech, Bhutto Zardari condemned the historical judicial complacency that allowed dictators to alter the constitution at will, often sidelining democratic governance. He criticized the judicial overreach that has seen courts amending the constitution and engaging extensively in political cases, which he claimed distracts from their primary responsibilities.

The PPP Chairman also touched upon electoral reforms, particularly the controversial Article 63(A), arguing for a balanced approach that respects parliamentary independence while discouraging floor-crossing through significant consequences.

Chairman Bhutto Zardari’s call for establishing a constitutional court is framed as a crucial step towards preventing the recurrence of past wrongs against elected officials and ensuring that justice prevails uniformly across Pakistan.
