Islamabad: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) expressed frustration with the Pakistani government’s request for additional time to decide on endorsing an amicus brief for the release of Dr. Aafia Siddiqui on humanitarian grounds. This case, which has drawn considerable attention, involves Dr. Siddiqui, currently imprisoned in the United States.
According to Aafia Movement, the hearing, presided over by Justice Sardar Ejaz Ishaque Khan, addressed multiple requests from the government seeking extensions to deliberate on the legal interventions necessary for Dr. Siddiqui’s potential release. Dr. Fowzia Siddiqui, represented by lawyer Imran Shafique, is advocating for her sister’s release.
During the proceedings, the Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Additional Attorney General Munawar Iqbal Duggal were questioned about their previous commitments to facilitate Dr. Siddiqui’s release. The court criticized the government’s delay, labeling it as baseless, especially since the government had previously expressed its willingness to support her return to Pakistan.
The discussion also touched on a forthcoming clemency petition slated for November, which would request the American President’s mercy for Dr. Siddiqui. The court requested the government to clarify its position on supporting this petition, giving a deadline until September 13 to review the draft and make a decision.
Additionally, the court responded to the government’s request for more time to discuss a prisoner transfer agreement by granting only four weeks, contrary to the five weeks requested, highlighting the urgency with which the court views the government’s actions in this international legal matter.
The session was attended by notable figures, including Jamaat-e-Islami leaders and members of the Aafia Movement, underscoring the public interest and international dimensions of the case.
