Lahore: Faculty, staff, and students of Government College University (GCU) Lahore gathered on Wednesday to celebrate Pakistan’s Independence Day, marked by a series of events that showcased national pride and collective memory of the country’s journey to independence.
According to Government College University, the celebration was initiated by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Shazia Bashir, who, alongside faculty members, led the flag-hoisting ceremony and participated in a tree planting event, symbolizing growth and renewal. The event featured an array of activities including the singing of national songs, inspiring speeches, a special “Azadi Mushaira” poetry session, and a quiz competition aimed at enriching the attendees’ knowledge of national history.
Mohammad Saad Farooq, the former president of the Nazir Ahmed Music Society, delivered a moving performance of a patriotic song, drawing significant applause from the audience. The “Azadi Mushaira,” chaired by Wajid Ameer, provided a platform for poets to express their nationalistic fervor through verse.
In her address, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Shazia Bashir emphasized the importance of unity and collective effort towards the nation’s progress. She highlighted the sacrifices made by Pakistan’s soldiers and citizens during the country’s fight for independence and subsequent conflicts, calling on the GCU community to set aside differences and work together for the betterment of both the institution and the country.
