SHASTRI GUIDES HARDIK PANDYA POST-T20I CAPTAINCY SNUB

Mumbai: Following his exclusion from the role of India’s T20I captain, Hardik Pandya received crucial guidance from former head coach Ravi Shastri on navigating his career forward. Despite being a key contender for the position, Pandya was overlooked in favor of Suryakumar Yadav for the leadership role during the current tour of Sri Lanka.

According to International Cricket Council, Shastri advised Pandya to maintain his game activity to achieve match fitness, which is crucial for his potential selection in one-day internationals as well. Shastri emphasized the importance of Pandya being able to bowl a full quota of overs to retain balance in the team.

Pandya’s fitness has been a concern, affecting his selection and responsibilities. He has struggled with back injuries since 2018, which were exacerbated during a high-profile match against Pakistan. Although he recovered in time for the 2019 Cricket World Cup, his back issues necessitated surgery later that year.

Despite these challenges, Pandya demonstrated resilience and skill during the recent T20 World Cup, contributing significantly to India’s victory. His performance, particularly in taking pivotal wickets in crucial matches, underscored his value as an all-rounder.

Shastri remarked on Pandya’s understanding of his physical condition and his inspirational performances, suggesting these should propel him to prioritize his fitness to maximize his cricketing potential.
