DataFest Africa 2024: A Catalyst for East Africa’s Data-Driven Transformation

Nairobi: Over 250 stakeholders including government officials, academics, and industry experts gathered at the DataFest Africa 2024 conference, highlighting the transformative power of data in East Africa. The event, co-organized by the Aga Khan University and Pollicy, focused on utilizing data and technology to overcome regional challenges and foster development across the continent.

According to The Aga Khan University announcement issued on 18 July 2024, the conference themed “Opportunities for all: Harnessing Data and Technology for Africa’s Transformation” served as a crucial platform for dialogue and collaboration among various sectors. Keynote speakers, including Kenya’s Deputy Data Commissioner Oscar Otieno, emphasized the importance of effective legislation and enforcement in advancing data protection and utilization.

Throughout the event, discussions underscored the significant role of data in sectors such as healthcare, where the World Health Organization projects that data-driven interventions could save up to one million lives annually by 2030. Farhana Alarakhiya, AKU’s Chief Data Innovation Officer, detailed the university’s initiatives in integrating electronic health records to enhance healthcare outcomes through data.

Since its inception in 2019, DataFest Africa has played a pivotal role in promoting data science and its application across the African continent. Phillip Ayazika, Pollicy’s Director of Programs, highlighted ongoing efforts to leverage data for social change, marking this fifth edition of the conference as a key milestone in these endeavors.
