Habib University Initiates Lecture Series on Modernizing Philanthropy in the Islamic Context

Karachi, Habib University has inaugurated a groundbreaking lecture series titled “Reshaping Philanthropy in the Islamic World,” aimed at redefining the concept of giving within the Islamic tradition through the lens of higher education and societal empowerment. The series began on January 17, 2024, with an insightful lecture by Dr. Hasnain Walji, Executive Director of United Global Initiative, who shared his perspectives on ethical leadership, social responsibility, and the transformative power of universities in Muslim societies.

According to Habib University, Dr. Walji’s presentation, “Universities as Nurseries of Ethical Leadership and Social Responsibility for the Advancement of Muslim Societies,” explored several key themes, including the essential role of philanthropy in reshaping societal mindsets towards empowerment rather than mere charity. Citing the Quranic verse that underscores the importance of spending from one’s possessions for the greater good, Dr. Walji emphasized the empowerment aspect of philanthropy, highlighting the potential of today’s students to become tomorrow’s philanthropic leaders.

Dr. Walji further delved into the immaterial value of knowledge and wisdom, drawing on Alvin Toffler’s insights to discuss the shift towards a knowledge-based power structure in the 21st century. He underscored the unique capability of universities, like Habib University, to serve as catalysts for transformation — not just change — by preparing future leaders to address complex ethical challenges.

Central to his lecture was the discussion on the ethos of learning, service, and personal development, where he praised Habib University’s Yohsin philosophy for its emphasis on ethical learning and holistic development. This approach, Dr. Walji, sets the university apart as an institution dedicated to producing leaders whose ethics define their identity.

Highlighting the virtues essential in philanthropy and education — empathy, compassion, and integrity — Dr. Walji advocated for a philanthropic model that integrates these values to address global challenges effectively. He pointed out the significance of Ihsan, or doing beautiful things, as a spiritual and ethical framework guiding philanthropic efforts and educational endeavors.

The lecture series, as outlined by Dr. Walji, is not merely an academic exercise but a call to action for higher education institutions to play a pivotal role in reshaping philanthropy. By integrating ethical leadership and social responsibility into their core missions, universities like Habib University are positioned to influence the advancement of Muslim societies positively.

Dr. Walji’s participation was commemorated with a token of appreciation from the Habib family, symbolizing the university’s gratitude and the lecture series’ potential to inspire meaningful dialogue and action within the realm of Islamic philanthropy.
