UET Lahore Hosts ‘Water for Peace’ Event, Highlighting Solutions to Pakistan’s Water Crisis

Lahore, The University of Engineering and Technology (UET) Lahore, through the concerted efforts of its student societies ICE UET and Climate Action Forum, hosted a significant event titled “Water for Peace” in observance of World Water Day 2024. Aimed at addressing the pressing issue of water scarcity, the event facilitated a comprehensive dialogue among students, faculty, and water management experts.

According to University of Engineering and Technology, the event was honored by the presence of Deputy Director of Planning and Development at Lahore Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) Mr. Tayyab Malik, alongside other esteemed academicians including Prof. Dr. Khalid Mehmood, Prof. Dr. Noor Muhammad Khan, Prof. Dr. Asif Ali Qaiser, and Prof. Dr. Amir Ikhlaq. These guest speakers shed light on various facets of Pakistan’s water crisis, from the impacts of climate change on water contamination and scarcity to the innovative solutions being pursued in water treatment and conservation.

Mr. Malik elaborated on the initiatives WASA is undertaking to mitigate the water challenges faced by Pakistan, emphasizing the need for community engagement and sustainable practices. Dr. Ikhlaq highlighted the advanced oxidation processes being explored for water purification, while Dr. Khan discussed the detrimental effects of water pollution on soil, structures, and agriculture. Prof. Dr. Qaiser, on the other hand, discussed the potential of membrane-based technology in wastewater treatment, pointing towards a hopeful future in combating water scarcity.

The event featured a rich agenda that included keynote addresses, panel discussions, and a riddle session aimed at fostering a deeper understanding of water management among the participants. Additionally, a Poster and Video Competition was held to engage the students creatively, with the aim of raising awareness about the water crisis and encouraging proactive approaches to water conservation.

The event concluded with a prize distribution ceremony at the Transportation Seminar Hall, where winners and runners-up of the competitions were honored. Azka Khan from Civil Engineering and the team of Junaid, Arham, and Zohaib from Environmental Engineering emerged as winners of the Poster and Video Competitions, respectively.

This ‘Water for Peace’ event not only served as a platform for knowledge exchange but also as a catalyst for action among the youth, underscoring UET Lahore’s commitment to addressing environmental challenges through education and innovation.
