Islamabad, Senator Taj Haider, in charge of the Central Election Cell of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), has issued a letter to the Chief Election Commissioner demanding the immediate release of workers arrested in NA 127 Lahore. He alleges these arrests are unjust and politically motivated, especially in the context of the upcoming elections where Bilawal Bhutto Zardari is a candidate.
According to Pakistan Peoples Party, Senator Haider’s letter details the arrests of individuals in NA 127, Lahore, who recently joined the PPP campaign from other political parties. The letter specifically mentions the arrest of Shahzad and Shehbaz, former PTI workers, now aligned with the PPP. Senator Haider asserts that their arrest by the Punjab Police is part of a campaign to instill fear and deter support for the PPP in the area. He claims that these workers were arrested on the basis of a four-month-old FIR, which interestingly was not acted upon while they were members of the PML(N).
Furthermore, the letter mentions an incident involving the PPP’s campaign in-charge, Zulfiqar Ali Badr, who, upon contacting the CCPO regarding the arrests, allegedly encountered unprofessional and inappropriate behavior from the officer. Senator Haider describes this as indicative of a broader pattern of fascist tactics being employed against the PPP, which he believes will escalate if not addressed promptly.
Senator Haider’s correspondence with the Chief Election Commissioner is a call for immediate intervention. He requests not only the release of the arrested individuals but also legal action against those responsible for what he describes as wrongful arrests. This situation highlights the tense political atmosphere in Lahore’s NA 127 constituency, reflecting broader challenges facing the democratic process in Pakistan.
