Lahore, Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Ali Cheema as the new Vice Chancellor of the university, effective January 3, 2024. Dr. Cheema brings a wealth of experience and academic excellence to his new role at one of Pakistan’s leading educational institutions.
According to Lahore University of Management Sciences, Dr. Cheema has been an integral part of LUMS since 1999, serving in various capacities including as an Associate Professor of Economics and Politics at the Mushtaq Ahmad Gurmani School of Humanities and Social Sciences. He has also held the position of Director of the Mahbub Ul Haq Research Centre at LUMS and chaired the Economics Department from 2004 to 2010.
Dr. Cheema’s extensive involvement in academic and research initiatives extends beyond LUMS. He is a co-founder of the Centre for Economic Research in Pakistan (CERP), a Senior Research Fellow at IDEAS Pakistan, and co-lead academic of the International Growth Centre’s Pakistan programme. His associations with prestigious organizations like the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL) at MIT and Evidence in Governance and Politics (EGAP) further amplify his credentials.
His contributions are not limited to academia, as evidenced by his membership on the Board of Trustees of the Institute of Development Studies, Sussex, and founding the Stockholm Challenge Award-winning portal, Relief Information System for Earthquakes, Pakistan (RISEPAK). Additionally, he has been actively involved in various high-level task forces and commissions at both provincial and federal levels, including the National and Punjab’s Provincial Finance Commissions, and serves as a director of the Kashf Foundation and the State Bank of Pakistan.
Dr. Cheema’s appointment as Vice Chancellor is expected to steer LUMS towards greater heights in its pursuit of global academic excellence.
