ISSI Inaugurates ‘ASEAN Corner’ to Deepen Pakistan-ASEAN Relations

Islamabad, The Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad (ISSI) will launch an ‘ASEAN Corner’ on 23 October 2023. This initiative is a collaborative endeavor by ISSI and the ASEAN Committee in Islamabad (ACI) to fortify the partnership between Pakistan and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). Following the inauguration, a roundtable discussion titled “Forging Partnerships: Exploring the Future Prospects of Pakistan-ASEAN Relations” will be conducted.

According to a news release by Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad, the ‘ASEAN Corner’ serves as a testament to the significance of the relationship between Pakistan and ASEAN. This establishment, greenlit during a structured dialogue between ISSI and ACI in January 2023, underscores the importance of ASEAN’s role both regionally and globally.

The collaboration between ASEAN and Pakistan is rooted in shared goals for economic cooperation and regional stability. Positioned strategically, Pakistan acts as a bridge connecting South Asia with the Middle East, aligning with ASEAN’s objectives of trade and connectivity. Both entities collaborate across various sectors, from industry and investment to counterterrorism efforts, reflecting their commitment to economic advancement and regional safety.

Pakistan’s ‘Vision East Asia’ policy demonstrates its dedication to fostering ties with ASEAN. While ASEAN acknowledges Pakistan as an essential ally in its external dealings, mutual ties are bolstered through increased diplomatic engagement, collaborative projects, and cultural exchanges. Such a relationship embodies their mutual vision for a stable and thriving Asia amidst global challenges.

The ‘ASEAN Corner’ will provide valuable print and electronic resources, enabling researchers and scholars to delve deeper into Southeast Asia’s political, economic, and security landscape. It aims to suggest ways to enhance engagement between Pakistan and ASEAN nations.

Following the inauguration, the roundtable discussion will feature high-ranking diplomats from ASEAN, prominent officials from Pakistan, and representatives from the business sector. The discourse will focus on evaluating Pakistan’s developing ties with ASEAN and providing insights into regional hurdles and prospects, ultimately proposing policy suggestions to augment Pakistan’s association with ASEAN.

The event will culminate with Pakistan’s Foreign Minister, Ambassador Jalil Abbas Jilani, unveiling the ‘ASEAN Corner’ plaque, in the presence of the Heads of ASEAN Missions based in Islamabad.
