Success in Sustainability: UOL ranks 1st in private sector universities of Pakistan

Lahore, July 12, 2023 (PPI-OT): The Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings are the only global performance tables that evaluate universities using a wide-ranging and balanced comparison based on four key areas: Research, Stewardship, Outreach, and Teaching, all aligned with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This ranking delivers a complete assessment of universities’ efforts to deliver SDGs outcomes. In the recently released edition of THE Impact Rankings 2023 that covered 1,519 universities from 112 countries/regions, The University of Lahore (UOL) has emerged as the top-ranked private-sector university in Pakistan. The university’s remarkable progress is evident as it climbed up the rankings to secure the 4th position among all universities in Pakistan.

Maintaining its strong position on the global stage, UOL has achieved a higher global ranking, moving up from 500 to 489, and is now placed among the top 401-600 universities worldwide. This year, the number of participating universities increased from 1,410 to 1,591, showcasing the growing interest among educational institutions to contribute to the SDGs. Furthermore, the UOL shows exceptional performance in the Impact Rankings for SDGs 2, 6, 9, 12, 13, and 17, indicating its assurance to addressing precarious issues at the national and international levels.

SDG 2 – ‘Zero Hunger’ holds significant importance in the Pakistani perspective as it aims to eradicate hunger, improve food security, and promote sustainable agriculture. The university’s efforts in this area contribute through teaching on food sustainability, and commitment to tackle food waste and address hunger on campus and locally. This remarkable effort places UOL between 101-200 globally.

SDG 6 – ‘Clean Water and Sanitation’ is vital for Pakistan as it faces challenges related to water scarcity and inadequate sanitation facilities. UOL’s research initiatives and commitment towards ensuring good water in the wider community, have made UOL No. 1 in the private sector universities of Pakistan and among 200-300 worldwide. SDG 9 – ‘Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure’ plays a crucial role in Pakistan’s development, fostering economic growth, and enhancing infrastructure. UOL is placed between 400-600 due to its advancements in technological innovation, promotion of sustainable industrialization, and strengthening of infrastructure systems. UOL maintained its position and ranked in the bracket of 401-600 internationally.

SDG 12 – ‘Responsible Consumption and Production’ focuses on waste management and sustainable practices. UOL’s innovative approaches, including its patents, demonstrate its commitment to reducing waste, promoting recycling, and fostering a culture of responsible consumption. In this regard, the university ranked 200-300 in worldwide. Another significant achievement is registered on the SDG 13 – ‘Climate Action’ where the university has been ranked 100-200 internationally and It holds particular significance in Pakistan due to the country’s vulnerability to climate change and frequent floods. UOL’s dedication to climate action contributes to raising awareness, implementing mitigation strategies, and addressing the impact of floods both nationally and internationally.

SDG 17 – ‘Partnerships for the Goals’ stresses the importance of collaboration and global partnerships to achieve the SDGs. UOL’s active engagement in national and international collaborations further strengthens the collective effort towards sustainable development and ranked it as 1st in private sector universities of Pakistan and 401-600 in worldwide. These achievements mark the university’s commitment to sustainable development globally.
