Lahore, July 12, 2023 (PPI-OT):Universities offer degree programmes in the field of sports sciences for individuals who want to combine their passion for sports with academic skills and ensure a successful career in their field. The University of Lahore (UOL) is also providing sports enthusiasts with the opportunity to pursue academic degrees in sports. Availing this opportunity, Ms Nida Akram Awan got admission to UOL for the MPhil in Sports Sciences and Physical Education in October 2022.
Ms Awan is an international baseball player and a national tennis player. Stating her motivation behind getting admission to UOL, she said, “As an athlete, my aim was to select a degree programme that would allow me to balance my academic pursuits and athletic career effectively. Consequently, I began studying physical education at UOL.”
She believes that her experience of studying at UOL was exactly what she anticipated. The university provides her with the freedom to compete without any stress or academic pressure, which, according to her, is crucial for a player, along with representing the university during competitions. There is a long list of achievements that make Ms Awan one of her kind at UOL. She won two back-to-back inter-university championships while representing UOL and won a gold medal in the 1st Kamyab Jawan Sports Drive by the prime minister of Pakistan.
Recently, she represented Pakistan in the 3rd BFA Women’s Baseball Asian Cup in Hong Kong and won matches against Sri Lanka and Hong Kong. Moreover, she represented Pakistan in the 2nd Baseball Championship held in Zhongshan, China (2019) and in the international tennis tournament “Syed Tajammul Abbas World Ranking Juniors Tennis Championship, 2018” held in Islamabad, Pakistan. Ms Awan got a gold medal in weightlifting and a bronze medal in arm wrestling at the national championship.
Presently, Ms Awan is focusing both on academics and sports, representing UOL in the yearly intervarsity competitions. She is a role model for all other sports geeks. Advising the young athletes, she stated that they should take advantage of the resources available to them, both academic and extracurricular. The skills and knowledge they acquire during their studies will serve them well throughout their lives. Moreover, she said, “I know the challenges that come with pursuing excellence in sports. It can be a tough and unforgiving journey, but the struggles make us stronger and more resilient in the long run. With hard work, dedication, and a positive attitude, one can achieve great things on and off the field.”
