LUMS Alumnus Saim Sadiq Making Waves Internationally 

Lahore, December 27, 2022 (PPI-OT):Filmmaker Saim Sadiq’s (BSc ’14) career has been nothing short of remarkable, as he has represented Pakistan on multiple international platforms over the years. A graduate of the Mushtaq Ahmad Gurmani School of Humanities and Social Sciences at LUMS, he also holds a graduate degree in Film Directing from Columbia University. Sadiq was recently awarded the Vice Chancellor’s Alumni Achievement Award (VC AAA) at the Alumni Homecoming for his outstanding achievements and for making Pakistan proud.

In 2019, Sadiq’s short film, Darling, won the Orizzonti Award for Best Short Film at the 76th Venice Film Festival and was also an official selection at the Toronto International Film Festival 2019. Moreover, his short film, Nice Talking to You was an official selection at South by Southwest 2019, and Palm Springs International Festival of Short Films 2019. The film also made the British Academy Film Awards Shortlist for Best Student Film.

His latest venture, Joyland has been shortlisted by The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for the 95th Academy Awards; the first Pakistani film to have made the cut. The film has been selected in the ‘International Feature Film’ category. The movie has also won the Jury Award in Un Certain Regard section as well at the 75th Cannes Film Festival 2022. Sadiq has created a niche for himself, and that is what sets him apart. We wish him all the best for his future endeavours!

A Two Day Hands-On Workshop Cell Culture from Fundamentals to Applications

Karachi, December 27, 2022 (PPI-OT):The Department of Molecular Medicine and Department of Research conducted a hands-on workshop on the Fundamentals and Applications of Cell Culture on 13th and 14th December, 2022. The aim of the workshop was to equip the participants with basic cell culture techniques including harvesting, sub culturing, seeding, cryopreservation, revival, drug preparation, and cytotoxicity assays.

The program commenced with a recitation from Holy Quran. Dr. Yamna Khurshid welcomed the participants and highlighted the significance of cell culture in the research. The keynote lecture highlighting the clinical applications of cell culture was delivered by Executive Director Research, Prof. Dr. Talat Mirza. Dr. Shumaila Usman followed forward to give the participants an introduction to the cell culture. The participants were then provided hands-on experience in sub-culturing, counting, seeding, and drug preparations by Dr. Shumaila Usman, Dr. Rehan Imad, and Dr. Yamna Khurshid.

On day second, Dr. Yamna Khurshid further broadened the understanding of the participants on
Invitro cytotoxicity and cell viability assays. The lecture was followed by hands-on sessions on drug treatment and MTT assay.

The workshop ended with a thought-provoking and energizing lecture on recent advances in cell culture by an invited speaker from the Aga Khan University Dr. Mati Ur Rehman. The participants shared that they gained new insight and valuable knowledge which will help them in designing and developing their research projects.

A Four Day Workshop on Research Methodology 

Karachi, December 27, 2022 (PPI-OT):The workshop on Research Methodology was organized by the Registrar office through the Department of Research in collaboration with the Directorate of Educational Development (DED) and Office of Research, Innovation and Commercialization (ORIC) from 22nd to 25th November, 2022. This workshop has been designed to promote the professional development of the faculty with capacity building in research and enhanced productivity.

The multidisciplinary participants represented over 10 departments of ZU including the College of Eastern Medicine, ZUFONAM, Medical Technology, CSLHS, FLAHS, Pharmacy, Medical and Dental Colleges. The program started with the greatest name of Allah and a welcome address by Dr. Yamna Khurshid. The keynote lecture highlighting the significance of the workshop and research process was delivered by Executive Director of Research, Dr. Talat Mirza.

The first two days of the workshop were dedicated to qualitative and quantitative research, critical literature review, literature search, educational research, systematic review and meta-analysis and scientific writing including synopsis, thesis and manuscript and facilitated by Dr. Talat Mirza, Dr. Kiran Hashmi, Dr. Zil-e-Rubab, Dr. Amna Aamir, Dr. Syeda Rakhshanda, Dr. Saeeda Baig, Dr. Farah Ahmed and Mr. Shiraz Khurshid.

The third day was devoted and conducted by Dr. Zulfiqar Umrani, Director ORIC and Mr. Ali Haider. They provided adequate knowledge about the ZU research and innovation ecosystem and grant writing. The Honorable Vice Chancellor, Dr. Irfan Hyder delivered an intellectually stimulating and thought-provoking lecture promoting and advocating research culture in ZU.

On day fourth, the first session on Endnote was conducted by Dr. Rehan Imad. Dr. Farah Ahmed, delivered a lecture on statistical methods followed forward by Dr. S. Hasan Danish hands-on session on SPSS. The participants’ feedback was overwhelmingly favourable and encouraging. They appreciated the efforts of the facilitators and organizers. They acknowledged that they gained valuable knowledge which will help them in their research.

Symposium on “Practicing professional ethics at health care systems” 

Rawalpindi, December 27, 2022 (PPI-OT):Students of Allied Health Sciences (CP, MIT, MLT) from semester 6th and 4th from Armed Forced Postgraduate Medical Institute have arranged one Day Symposium on ” Practicing Professional Ethics at Health Care Systems” under the mentorship of Ms. Saira Javed (Lecturer Clinical Psychology, NDP/ Incharge Psychologist, N-TRC) NUMS.

The main objective of this event was to promote the practice of professional ethics among healthcare systems. Recognizing the importance of being sensitive to ethical issues within everyday clinical practice and develop in the ability to effectively address the ethical concerns of patients, as well as participants in research is the first step towards professionalism.

In this regard group of students from 6th Semester presented 09 Systematic Review Articles developed on PRISMA protocols on following topics

1. Healthcare ethics of gender equality: the scoping and systematic review

2. The Importance and Necessity of Islamic work ethic in the health care settings in Pakistan

3. Unethical Experimentation: Violation of Human rights and International Criminal Law

4. Consequences of work stress on professional ethics in the medical profession.

5. Ethical dilemmas that medical students confront

6. Ethical Issues in Compliance with Religious Beliefs in Medical

7. Healthcare Ethics for Gender X

8. Ethical Dilemmas in Laboratory Medicine: A Systematic Review

9. An Introduction to Human Genome Editing Using the Crispr-Cas9

Technique, Ethical concerns and Guidelines

Whereas, a group of students from 4th Semester displayed their 05 original case studies via Role plays (Self Recorded Videos).

This event was chaired by Dr. Aneela Maqsood (Associate Professor, Behavioural Sciences Department/ Additional Director, National Centre for Research on Suicide Prevention) Fatima Jinnah Women University, Rawalpindi. Dr. Maqsood got really impressed by systematic reviews on different relevant topics which are need of the hour due to a variety of reasons, including increasing litigation, changes in complexities in medical practice and the importance of consumer courts.

Whereas, she highly appraised the ideas and skills of the students presented role play. She further appreciates Mentor for an excellent demonstration of the inculcated professionalism and innovative teaching methodology.

At, the end of session Chief Guest, Lt Col Shahzad Iqbal (GSO-1 Training and OIC BS AHS, AFPGMI) while appreciating Ms. Saira said, it is a pleasure to be part of this insightful symposium, which brings together students from different specializations of AHS to know about the significance of practicing professional Ethics in healthcare systems.

PCATP approved the Islamia University of Bahawalpur to start a 5-year Bachelor of Architecture program 

Bahawalpur, December 27, 2022 (PPI-OT):The Pakistan Council of Architects and Town Planners (PCATP) approved the Islamia University of Bahawalpur to start a 5-year Bachelor of Architecture program. A special permit has been issued in this regard. The program will be launched in the Department of Architecture, Faculty of Engineering. Engr. Prof. Dr. Athar Mahboob, Vice-Chancellor the Islamia University of Bahawalpur, said that the students of South Punjab and the educational and social circles were eager for the initiation of this professional program for a long time.

Prof. Dr. Muhammad Amjad Dean Faculty of Engineering and Jam Ayaz Mehmood Chairman Department of Architecture worked hard in this regard and the Islamia University of Bahawalpur has become the first university in the region where Bachelor of Architecture 5-year program will be started.

Since the initiation of this program, on one hand, the gap in this field has been filled and on the other hand, the architectural heritage of South Punjab and Bahawalpur will be preserved as well as enhanced. Meanwhile, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Amjad along with Prof. Dr. Moazzam Jameel Registrar, Jam Ayaz Mehmood and faculty members met the Vice Chancellor Engr. Prof. Dr. Athar Mahboob and thanked the Vice Chancellor for the special permission and guidance and mentorship for Bachelor of Architecture.

Prof. Dr. Muhammad Amjad said that the Faculty of Engineering has crossed another milestone since the initiation of this program and the Islamia University of Bahawalpur has become unique and distinguished from other universities in the region by having another honour.

Bahawalpur, December 27, 2022 (PPI-OT):Mir Syed Jamal Ahmed President of Anjuman Tajran Shahi Bazar Bahawalpur and General Secretary Central Anjuman Tajran Bahawalpur has said in a video message that the traders of Bahawalpur believe that the city will develop with the development of educational institutions in the city. Will talking about the development and expansion of Islamia University Bahawalpur, he said that the increase in the number of male and female students in the university has greatly benefited our businessmen.

The number of male and female students in the university has increased tremendously to 65,000, which has created new employment opportunities in the city and boosted small and medium businesses. Students come to the city market for shopping, which is causing economic development in the city. Talking about the infrastructure of Islamia University Bahawalpur, he said that there are many development projects going on in the university which have provided employment to the local people of the city.

The number of faculties in the university has increased from 8 to 16 which has provided employment to the educated people of the region. The university is of economic importance in Bahawalpur region. He prayed that the Vice-Chancellor Engineer Professor Dr. Athar Mehboob would continue his development and expansion policy and continue to work for the university in the same way.
