Apart from it, separate examination halls were established in the Institute of Art and Design for a total of 308 candidates, including 85 girls and 223 boys. These were the candidates who remained absent in the first phase of the entrance test held on October 30.

In the second phase of the entrance test, the candidates 11,580 in number hailed from 10 districts of Sindh which included Jamshoro, Hyderabad, Mirpurkhas, Tharparkar, Badin, Tando Muhammad Khan, Tando Allahyar, Matiyari, Thatta and Sujawal ventured their luck for admission to nearly 10,000 seats.

Speaking at a press conference at the Institute of Art and Design after the onset of the entry test, Sindh University Vice-Chancellor Prof. (Meritorious) Dr. Muhammad Siddique Kalhoro said that various committees under the convener-ship of the senior professors and officers were constituted to conduct the two phases of the pre-entry test in the best way, which yielded positive results.

“Due to the excellent performance of the conveners and their team members, the second phase of the test has also been completed successfully”, the Vice-Chancellor said. Talking on scholarship opportunities at Sindh University, he said that he had over Rs. 300 million in form of scholarships among 4,000 students on the campus. “We want every child to get a scholarship because the poorest students study here at SU”, he said.

Dr. Kalhoro said that the University of Sindh was not only a degree awarding institution, but it had been trying to inculcate knowledge and skills in students so that they might get jobs from the national job market and start businesses. He said that with the support of the federal IT ministry, the National Incubation Center (NIC) had been established at the Elsa Qazi Campus of Sindh University in Hyderabad, which had started its work in the professional way.

“Through this center, fresh graduates of Sindh University will be trained and oriented towards business as well as entrepreneurship”, the Vice-Chancellor said and added that the youth will be able to start their own small and large enterprises with the help of IT and other modern techniques, through which they could become millionaires instead of wasting time in pursuing government jobs after completing higher education.

He said that the National Incubation Center will help them build their career. Dr. Kalhoro said that by holding the test in two phases, the costs were reduced and the candidates did not have to face any problems due to the lack of rush. He said that despite the recent flood devastation in Sindh, more candidates submitted their applications for admission to different BS programs in comparison with the last year, which in fact showed an expression of confidence of the students in the growing reputation of the University of Sindh.

He said that for the academic year 2023, a total of 23513 candidates, including 20413 for bachelor and 3085 for master degree programs, applied for admissions at Sindh University, which was a big number, while the number of applicants for admission in the rest of the universities of the province he said had significantly decreased compared to last year.

Dr. Kalhoro further said that the Higher Education Commission (HEC) Islamabad did not increase the budget of the university by even a single penny from 2015 till now, due to which the university was suffering from crisis. He said that the Sindh government had definitely increased the budget of the Alma Mater during the last two to three years, but the institution still needed more funds in order to control the lack of an annual budget of Rs. one billion.

During the entrance test, temporary medical dispensaries were established in various examination centers including the Department of Media and Communication Studies, Arts Faculty Building, Department of Zoology and Institute of English Language and Literature, while ambulances were also arranged to deal with emergency situations. Fool proof security arrangements were also made and the candidates were provided with a very friendly and peaceful environment during the test.

Focal persons of various campuses and the Deans of different Faculties were present to witness the pre-entrance test. The entire control room was established at the office of the Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences Prof. Dr. Hamadullah Kakepoto. On the other hand, the sitting places for male visitors were arranged at Fatima Jinnah Girls Gymnasium and for females at Syed Panay Ali Shah Model School.

The parents were provided with bottles of mineral water, while the test takers were also provided with drinking water bottles, biscuits and ball pens. The candidates and their parents expressed happiness over the arrangements made by the Sindh University administration for the smooth conduct of the entry test. They went into raptures over the entire discipline and exam system including security.

Kohli and Dar crowned ICC Players of the Month for October

Dubai, November 07, 2022 (PPI-OT):The International Cricket Council (ICC) today announced the winners of the ICC Player of the Month awards for October 2022. Virat Kohli claims the ICC Men’s Player of the Month following a series of star performances as India charged their way to the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup semi-finals, while Pakistan’s veteran all-rounder Nida Dar is the ICC Women’s Player of the Month thanks to her sensational form in their Women’s Asia Cup campaign.

Both Kohli and Dar were elected winners following a global vote conducted among media representatives, ICC Hall of Famers, former international players, and fans registered at icc-cricket.com. Kohli celebrates his first Player of the Month prize after registering 205 runs with the bat, and showcasing the full array of his batting talent throughout October.

As well as scoring a brilliant half-century against Netherlands in Sydney, he produced an unforgettable innings in the stunning victory over Pakistan in front of a capacity crowd in Melbourne to kick off their Super 12 campaign in the Men’s T20 World Cup.

At one stage 31 for four, Kohli asserted his dominance on the opposition bowlers in a memorable display of controlled aggression, eventually guiding his side to chase down the 160 target on the final ball, thanks to his unbeaten 82 from 53 balls.

The India talisman secures the award after being nominated for the first time, edging out a competitive field which included South Africa’s sublime finisher David Miller and the in-form Sikandar Raza of Zimbabwe, who both enjoyed key contributions at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in Australia.

Reacting to his ICC Men’s Player of the Month prize, Kohli commented: “It is a great honour for me to have been voted the ICC Men’s Player of the Month for October. Being chosen as the standout player by fans across the globe as well as the panel makes this accolade even more special for me.

“I want to pay tribute to the other nominees who performed so well during the month and also to my teammates, who continue to support me to perform to the best of my ability.”

Former West Indies international and ICC Player of the Month voting panel member Daren Ganga, added: “Kohli is the quintessential batter. He displayed immense character to overcome a lean period with the bat. October saw him score an unbeaten 49 against South Africa followed by two half centuries at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.

“That majestic knock against Pakistan will be remembered as one of the all-time best T20I innings. I saw it live at the MCG and to deliver in such style, in that occasion, is only a privilege enjoyed by the greats of this beautiful game.”

For her key contributions to Pakistan’s semi-final surge in the Women’s Asia Cup in Bangladesh, Nida Dar takes home the ICC Women’s Player of the Month award for October.

Scoring 145 valuable runs at an average of 72.50 during the month and taking eight key wickets, the influential all-rounder underlined her importance to the Pakistan cause despite falling short in the knockout stages.

Among the highlights she enjoyed during October, Dar was sensational in the historic victory over India in Sylhet. Batting first, she arrived to the crease at 33 for three, before powering 56 not out to take them to a competitive score of 137. She then went on to star with the ball, taking the key wickets of Harmanpreet Kaur and Jemimah Rodrigues as the eventual tournament winners fell short in dramatic fashion.

Dar claims her inaugural ICC Women’s Player of the Month win by edging out Indian duo Rodrigues and Deepti Sharma, who each produced impressive displays during their winning Women’s Asia Cup triumph.

On winning the ICC Women’s Player of the Month award for October, Dar commented: “It was great to be nominated for the award, and to win it is very special to me. I wish we could have won the Women’s Asia Cup, but I am happy that we as a team are performing, and the recent series win against Ireland at home shows the commitment the girls are putting into their game.

“I take great pride in representing my country and my aim is to contribute in my team winning as much as I can.”

Former Netherlands and Australia international and member of the voting panel Dirk Nannes added: “Nida was in superb form throughout the month with bat and ball and has been a consistent figure for Pakistan women for some time.

“A focal point in the Pakistan bowling attack, she continues to be an important player for them, and she richly deserves to be the ICC Women’s Player of the Month for October.”

Youths fed up with lawlessness in Karachi warn resistance

Karachi, November 06, 2022 (PPI-OT):Youths of Karachi are now fed up with the growing lawlessness in the megacity and they would put a strong resistance if the authorities concerned failed to improve the law and order, said the speakers of a protest demo of youth against the street crime, organized by Alternate, a youth organization, in front of the Karachi Press Club (KPC) here Sunday. It was led by Alternate organizer Aqib Hussain and Shaima Baloch.

Aqib Hussain said that the provincial government has left the millions of Karachiites at the mercy of criminals and killers. He said powerful mafias have been targeting citizens’ life and property. He said roads and streets of Karachi have virtually became killing fields for the Karachiites. He said the law enforcement agencies being paid from the taxpayers’ money have became powerless before the criminals. He said the citizens are compelled to think that the criminals are being patronised by the law enforcers.

He said thousands of policemen are deputed in Karachi and for their assistance rangers have also been deployed here for decades, but despite this more than 6000 street crimes, murders of 365 citizens, snatching of 20000 mobile phones and 37000 motorcycles is a big question mark on the performance of these law enforcers. In some cases, innocent citizens were killed by vested interests due to negligence of police and administration. Its recent example is lynching of two young men in Machhar Colony and target killing of a youth in Manghopir area, he said.

Young YouTuber Sajid Afridi said that the doors of education and employment were closed for the youth, the powerful classes had overpowered the society, especially the youth, on the basis of beliefs, language and ethnicity. The state was imposing anti-democratic reactionary ideas on the society in a planned manner due to which fascist thought was being embedded in every sphere of life.

Labor leader Himmat Phulpoto said that in these worst economic and social conditions, armed street criminals were roaming around Karachi fearlessly and playing with the lives of citizens. This situation had made the citizens mentally ill.

Young garment worker and leader of Alternate, Iqbal, said the Karachiites are being deprived of the basic facilities of life. Education, healthcare and public transport have been commercialized. Half of the megacity is deprived of clean potable water. The KE has plunged the megacity into darkness. Due to lack of planning the megacity is being converted into ruins. Price hike and inflammation have made the life of poor masses miserable. In these circumstances, roaming of armed criminals freely in City Street was alarming.

Youth leader Barkat said if the State cannot provide security to the citizens in the largest city of the country, it shows that it has completely failed.

The demo participants demanded that the killers of citizens and their patrons should be immediately arrested and punished as per law. They asked compensation of Rs5 million each for every slain citizen.

They asked the government to get returned all snatched cars, bikes and mobile phones or their compensation.

They said an independent commission comprising respectable citizens should be formed to review the performance of law enforcers and forward recommendations regarding their future course of action.

They asked for better training of police and raising awareness amongst them for human rights.

They said citizens committees should be formed at police station level to help improving law and order.

They said the locals should be recruited in police and it should be linked to elected local government institutions. They asked to form a Public Safety Committee to improve liaison between them.

They demanded free education and healthcare and affordable public transport and potable water for the Karachiites.

They asked for nationalisation of the KE and giving it under the control of city government.

They asked to give employment to jobless youth and reinstate the forcibly sacked workers. They asked to develop parks and playgrounds to give healthy recreational facilities to the youth.

Those spoke included National Trade Union Federation (NTUF) general secretary Nasir Mansoor, SITE Labour Forum leader Riaz Abbasi, Progressive Writers Association joint secretary Comrade Sajjad Zaheer and Home Based Women Workers Federation HBWWF leaders Zehra Khan and Saira Feroze Khuhro, Qazi Khizar from HRCP, Saeed Baloch form PFF and others.
