Career Management

Lahore, April 15, 2022 (PPI-OT):Ms Sadia Irfan, Director Human Resource of Fatima Group of Companies, visited the Lahore School on 13 April 2022 and delivered a stellar session on Career Management to the MBA cohort of 2022 in the Organizational Behaviour course. Almost the entire session was interactive and Ms Sadia answered a large number of questions.

She emphasized that everyone present had some talent within him or her: what was now needed was that that person should have a vision, should have the courage to implement that vision, and should have the right communication to reach the audience. The environment around us was volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous (VUCA) but we still needed to plan better.

How can one plan one’s career? Ms Sadia gave an example of how she forged her own career, starting with door to door selling on behalf of Electrolux, from where she learnt the importance of building trust and establishing need. Then she worked in pharma, at Nestle and at Pepsi, learning new skills in the process. At Fatima she was able to put her knowledge to practice by initiating change management. Her advice to the young MBAs was to focus first on their attitude.

Once they join an organization, they have to develop their personal brands. Also refrain from indulging in negativity: focus on creating value. A better approach would be to understand one’s boss: What does he want? How can one help one’s boss in making his work easier? How can one add value? “Do not be aggressive. Be assertive. Do not react. Respond after having thought through.”

If an MBA graduate, while working, felt that he or she lacked in some skill – numbers, Excel, software etc. – all he or she had to do was get some help, even tuition, and remove his or her weaknesses before these turn into failures.

In response to a question on job switching, she noted that when one switched jobs, one should ask oneself about the new company “Is the new company complex enough to teach me something new and of value?” While switching, one need not “unlearn” one’s core values; but one should be ready to adapt to the new “workstyles”.

Regarding HR, Ms Sadia’s view was that over the last few decades, HR has experienced a tremendous change in its ethos and function as it has moved far away from helping the line managers to hire employees to sitting at the strategy table. The MBA candidates from all the sections asked a large number of probing questions which Ms Sadia responded to with precision, candidness and experience.

In Memory: Aqsa Fatima and Amina Khan

Lahore, April 15, 2022 (PPI-OT):The LUMS community mourns the loss of its students, Aqsa Fatima (MBA 2022) and Amina Khan (MS Business and Public Policy 2021), who tragically passed away last night in a road accident. A resident at the LUMS campus, Aqsa Fatima, a student of the MBA class of 2022, was to graduate this June. A very friendly and jolly personality, Fatima leaves behind bereaved faculty and friends.

Dr. Tanveer Shehzad, Associate Professor, Suleman Dawood School of Business (SDSB) who taught Aqsa Fatima several courses shared his thoughts, “Ever since she joined the MBA Summer Immersion Programme in 2020, Aqsa came across as a great human being. She always had a confident, candid, and smiling attitude to face all tasks. While she was admired by all of her class fellows, she was also one of the favourite students of all her instructors. Full of spirit and passion, she would have been a change-maker for a better Pakistan, that I am sure of. Her demise is a great loss, and we are with her friends and family in these difficult times.”

“We fondly called Aqsa ‘Queen’. She didn’t like numbers and would ask instructors to give her any assignment except working with numbers! She was very straight forward and candid. What we couldn’t communicate to our instructors, Aqsa would do it for us! She will be deeply missed for her infectious smile, and her friendly and helpful nature,” shared Zahra Saeed, Class Representative MBA 2022.

Dr. Ghazal Mir Zulfiqar, Associate Professor, SDSB who taught Amna Khan Business and Government Relations commented, “Amna was such a lively and playful person. On the other hand, she was an extremely serious student who always used to step into my office, discussing her projects. I saw such a sharp improvement in her work. The MS BPP class is such a small tight knit group, and they are all like a family to me. Amna used to take the lead on all projects, and we could always count on her.”

Maham Naeem, Amna’s close friend and batch mate added, “She was such a happy person, always willing to help and take the lead. She was full of life, always smiling and volunteering to do presentations and projects. This is an irrevocable loss for all of us!”

Expressing his sadness at the tragic event, Vice Chancellor LUMS, Dr. Arshad Ahmad said, “The LUMS community is in shock. We must stand strong in this hour of grief and remember Aqsa and Amina in our prayers. Both were valuable members of our student body and this loss can never be replaced.”

Dr. Ahmad shared plans to hold a memorial service at LUMS and a tree-planting ceremony on campus to honour both students and keep their memories alive. Expressing his sentiments, Interim Provost, Dr. Tariq Jadoon said that these bright young students have gone too soon. “The void can never be filled. The thoughts and prayers of the entire university community are with the grieving families as they deal with this immense loss. May Allah ease their pain, and grant them patience,” said Dr. Jadoon.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to Amna and Aqsa’s families and friends; they are in our thoughts and prayers. May Allah grant them strength and patience to bear this irreparable loss. Three other male MBA students have survived the accident with injuries. We pray for their quick recovery and hope Allah provides them strength to recover from this traumatic incident.

A Regional Approach to Transboundary Water Issues: Pathways and Challenges

Islamabad, April 15, 2022 (PPI-OT):The Centre for Strategic Perspectives (CSP) at the Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad (ISSI) organized a seminar titled, “A Regional Approach to Transboundary Water Issues: Pathways and Challenges,” in collaboration with the Hanns Seidel Foundation (HSF) Pakistan.

The seminar had two working sessions. Session I was titled ‘Trans-boundary Water Issues in South Asia” and the speakers of the session included Dr. Hassan Abbas, Founding Chairman, ZiZAK; Dr. Medha Bisht, Senior Assistant Professor, IR, South Asian University, New Delhi; and was moderated by Dr. Muhammad Ashraf, Chairman, Pakistan Council for Research in Water Resources, Islamabad. Similarly, Session II was titled “Water Security Challenges in the Region” and the speakers included Dr. Sara Nowreen, Associate Professor Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology; and Dr. Shaheen Akhtar, Professor IR, National Defence University, Islamabad and Chair of the session is Mr. Ali Tauqeer Sheikh Former CEO, LEAD, Pakistan.

In her introductory remarks, Dr Neelum Nigar Director, CSP stressed on the need of regional cooperation to tackle the issue of water in South Asia. While in his welcome remarks, Ambassador Aizaz Ahmed Chaudhry, Director General ISSI highlighted the challenges due to climate change and water mismanagement and stressed that water is increasingly becoming a source of conflict due to transboundary and water-sharing reasons. Dr. Steffen Kudella, Country Director, HSF in his opening remarks stated that there is an alarming decrease in usable water in South Asia and Pakistan is no exception to this as it is becoming the most water-stressed country in the world.

In the Working Session 1, the first speaker, Dr. Hassan Abbas emphasized on the challenges, pathways and the unsustainable development models applied to manage water. Dr. Abbas opined that the models that are used are structurally heavy with minimum regard to socio-economic consequences; instead of appreciating and working with models that use cooperation as a tool over confrontation. While the second speaker, Dr. Midha Bisht highlighted that the model that is currently applicable in the case study of Pakistan is that of a cooperative antagonist, whereas, the model should be such that focuses on relationality over rationality for a sustainable future course.

In concluding the session, the hair reiterated the need to move beyond the rational to a more relational approach and move from confrontation to cooperation while we deal with transboundary water issues to gain maximum mutual benefit which not only helps to promote good relations but also helps the water itself and the ecology surrounding it to thrive and survive.

In the Working Session II, Dr. Shaheen Akhtar in her presentation highlighted the issues related to water security and assessed the lack of Pakistan’s water security. She further flagged the correlation of economy and agriculture with water security as well as hydropower potential in the region and touched upon the unsustainable management practices and mounting environmental pressures. Dr. Nowreen in her remarks shed light on issues and challenges related to surface and groundwater as well as climate change effects in Bangladesh.

She stated that Bangladesh is facing an increase in groundwater decline along with other major water-related challenges including drought, waterlogging, salinity, cyclone, flash floods and landslides. In concluding the session the chair echoed the concerns raised by the speakers and stated that the domestic water agenda is linked with regional water discourse. Equally imperative is the need for research and scientific studies by people involved in the Indus Water Treaty (IWT) between India and Pakistan.

In conclusion, while reflecting on the proceedings of the seminar, Ambassador Chaudhry stated that the IWT mechanism has worked and has remained working even through wars and confrontation. However, the challenges today demand a different approach to fully utilize the potential of water for mutual benefit. Ms. Meher Ghawas, Head of Program Management, HSF, Pakistan in her concluding remarks recapitulated the importance of good and sustainable water management and governance especially if it’s a shared resource. In the end, Ambassador Khalid Mahmood, Chairman Board of Governors presented his Vote of Thanks.

Timely examination can save premature babies from permanent blindness

Rawalpindi, April 15, 2022 (PPI-OT):Over eighty-five percent of premature babies who weigh less than 1.5 kilograms at the time of birth have a high risk of developing the disorganized growth of retinal blood vessels, which can cause vision problems including permanent blindness.

Babies born prematurely, before 266 days, have many obstacles to overcome in their first fragile weeks, one of which is eye development that can be resolved through screening and surgical procedures to help avoid serious eyesight problems like vision impairment and blindness.

Chief Consultant and Head of Retina Department at Al-Shifa Eye Hospital Dr Nadeem Qureshi said this while talking to the media persons. He said that the blood vessels of the retina develop three months after conception and complete their growth at the time of normal delivery.

If an infant is born prematurely, eye development can be disrupted, as the smaller a baby is at birth, the more likely that baby is to develop difficulties, he said. Using excess oxygen to treat premature babies in the hospitals stimulates abnormal vessel growth in the eyes, with the smallest and sickest having the highest risk of devastating effects of Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP), he said.

He added that studies have shown that keeping the oxygen saturation at a lower level from birth can reduce the rate of advanced ROP, a blinding eye disorder. All parents must include a vision screening in their list of baby check-ups between six and twelve months of age as every premature infant deserves the constant attention of an ophthalmologist because of his or her increased risk for eye misalignment, amblyopia, and the need for glasses to develop normal vision.

Dr Qureshi said that Al-Shifa Eye hospital has already signed MoUs with Fauji Foundation Hospital, Combined Military Hospital, and Benazir Bhutto Hospital to treat new-borns with vision complications. Al-Shifa Eye Hospital is the only facility in the SAARC region and among few in the world having the latest equipment and excellent skills to treat new-borns having, he claimed.

So far, trust has treated around 6000 infants in the last seven years and the number is bound to increase as the awareness grows, he said. He added that we are here to provide free guidance to all the state-owned and private healthcare facilities, including those in other countries, to help save thousands from plunging into darkness for life.

The Retina Department of Al-Shifa Hospital has 12 surgeons, assisted by trainees, and it performs Retinal OPD, lasers, injections and surgery every day of the week, Dr Qureshi informed. Average OPD at the Retina Department is 215 patients per day, average lasers are 35 per day, average injections are 50 per day and on average 25 surgeries are conducted daily, he added. He said that a retinal surgery costs about Rs95 thousand, but 75 percent of patients are treated free of cost.
