Kingston: West Indies cricket captain Shai Hope is shifting focus to the upcoming series against Pakistan following a 5-0 defeat in the T20I series against Australia. Hope attributed the loss to inconsistent batting performances, which allowed Australia to successfully chase down targets in each game.
Hope expressed disappointment over the team’s inability to deliver a complete batting display. He noted that the team either started strong but faltered towards the end, or vice versa. “When you’re playing against quality opposition like Australia, you’ve got to put things together for a more complete game,” Hope remarked at the post-match presentation.
Throughout the series, the West Indies batters struggled to capitalize on promising starts. In the opening match, they were at a promising 123 for 1 in the 13th over but ended with just 189. Similar patterns followed in subsequent games, with initial strong performances failing to translate into substantial scores.
A key aspect of the series was that West Indies batted first in all five matches. Hope suggested that the team might have performed better if they had been chasing. “In the Caribbean, we all know the stats show chasing is always the better thing to do,” he commented.
Despite the series outcome, Hope praised the bowling unit for their efforts. He emphasized that the upcoming series against Pakistan, beginning on July 31, offers an opportunity for the team to apply lessons learned from the Australia series. Hope is confident that with clearer strategies, especially in the bowling department, the team can find success.
The skipper remains optimistic about the future, aiming to refine the combination of skills for better execution on the field. As the West Indies prepare for their next challenge, Hope’s focus is on creating a cohesive and effective team dynamic.
