WCLA Launches PKR 1.73 Billion Restoration of Historic Bhatti Gate to Boost Lahore Tourism

Lahore: The Walled City of Lahore Authority has initiated a comprehensive PKR 1.73 billion restoration project at Bhatti Gate, aiming to transform it into a key tourist attraction by 2025. The project, supported by the World Bank, will focus on the renovation of house facades and infrastructure enhancements, with significant progress already made on numerous properties.

According to Zameen.Com, the restoration effort is part of the Punjab Tourism Economic Growth Programme and has already seen the completion of 190 out of 1,038 targeted properties. Bhatti Gate, often referred to as the “Chelsea of Lahore,” has historical significance as the residence of prominent figures such as poet Allama Iqbal and composer Khawaja Khurshid Anwar.

The WCLA’s plans include converting former police station rooms into facilities for tourists, including a tourist centre and a craft bazaar. This initiative mirrors the successful tourism model implemented at Delhi Gate. The project also involves extensive structural repairs, woodwork restoration, fresco lining, and the addition of illumination to highlight the architectural features of the gate.

One of the major challenges faced during the restoration has been the removal of encroachments and the relocation of a police station to make way for the tourist facilities.
