KARACHI: Dr. Fowzia Siddiqui, the head of the Global Aafia Movement, marked the United States’ 249th Independence Day by drawing attention to the continued imprisonment of her sister, Dr. Aafia Siddiqui. In a statement, she congratulated the American nation while urging them to reflect on the long-term incarceration of Dr. Aafia.
Dr. Fowzia highlighted a stark contrast between the celebratory fireworks of July 4th and the somber reality faced by Dr. Aafia at the FMC Carswell prison. She pointed out that the joy of Independence Day is overshadowed by the plight of her sister.
Expressing her thoughts on justice, Dr. Fowzia questioned whether those involved in Dr. Aafia’s case could recognize that true strength lies not in cruelty, but in acts of mercy and compassion. She noted that while Americans celebrate their freedom, they should also consider the 86-year sentence imposed on Dr. Aafia, which she claims is unjust as her sister has committed no crime.
Dr. Fowzia referenced President Donald Trump’s slogan, “Make America Great Again,” suggesting that showing clemency towards Dr. Aafia could be a step toward greatness for the nation. She called on justice-minded Americans to question their government on the treatment of Dr. Aafia.
In her appeal, Dr. Fowzia urged Pakistani officials and politicians visiting the U.S. to raise the issue of her sister’s imprisonment during their engagements with the U.S. administration, hoping that this time their voices will be heard.
