UoS Brings Together Leading Scholars for Seminar on Qur’anic Interpretation

Sargodha: The University of Sargodha’s Department of Islamic Studies recently hosted an international seminar focusing on the tradition of Tafsir and Qur’anic sciences in Pakistan and Egypt, marking a significant academic event that brought together eminent scholars from both nations.

The seminar, titled “The Tradition of Tafsir and Qur’anic Sciences in Pakistan and Egypt: Scholarly, Intellectual and Historical Perspectives,” aimed to create an academic platform for discussing classical and contemporary approaches to Qur’anic interpretation.

Chairman of the Department, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Ferozuddin Shah, inaugurated the seminar by welcoming the distinguished guests. He outlined the objectives and academic relevance of Qur’anic studies, emphasizing the discipline’s potential to address modern intellectual, social, and cultural questions.

Prof. Shah highlighted the importance of comparative studies between Pakistan and Egypt, suggesting that such exchanges could foster new avenues of scholarly collaboration and intellectual growth across the Muslim world.

Dr. Sheikh Ahmed Muhammad Salim Al-Sharqawi from Egypt’s Al-Azhar University provided an analysis of Egypt’s Tafsir tradition, detailing the historical scholarly contributions of Al-Azhar, as well as the methodological approaches and emerging trends in modern Qur’anic understanding.

From the University of the Punjab, Dr. Saad Siddiqui discussed the intellectual contributions of the Subcontinent to the field of Tafsir, focusing on classical texts and the region’s methodological depth in comparative Qur’anic studies.

Dr. Yasir Arafat from GC University Faisalabad explored the historical evolution of Qur’anic sciences in Pakistan and the broader Subcontinent, highlighting its scholarly rigor and diverse interpretive traditions.

The seminar concluded with Prof. Dr. Muhammad Ilyas, Dean of the Faculty of IT and Computing, presenting honorary certificates to the speakers. He commended the seminar’s scholarly contributions and noted that such academic exchanges are crucial for strengthening cross-regional research collaborations in Qur’anic studies.
