Dairy-Beef and small ruminant project team organise “National Livestock Forum” 

Lahore, May 23, 2022 (PPI-OT):The Dairy-Beef and small ruminant project team of the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences Lahore in collaboration with the University of Melbourne Australia organised a “National Livestock Forum” in Islamabad.

UVAS Vice-Chancellors Prof Dr Nasim Ahmad, Vice-Chancellor University of Education Lahore (UE) Prof Dr Talat Naseer Pasha, Dr Fateh Mari from Sindh Agricultural University while Dr David McGill, Dr Angus Campbell and Dr Anna Barrett joined the forum along with the Dairy-Beef and Small Ruminant projects team members. A number of extension managers, heads/CEOs from research and academia, government and NGOs from private and public sector and farmers were present.

Addressing the audience, Prof Nasim said that the project has identified key constraints to smallholder production and implemented innovative nutrition and health solutions that reduce mortality ratio in young lambs. He said such applied research-for-development projects carried out research that resulted in on-farm productivity increases of 25-30% and developed an important innovation, the ‘whole-family extension approach’.

Earlier, Project Manager Dr Humera Iqbal and Dr Hassan Mehmood Warraich spoke about the background of working in Pakistan in dairy, beef and small ruminants’ sectors. Dairy-Beef and Small Ruminant team shared their major contributions to the livestock sector within the previous decade. Dr Humera spoke about importance and gender inclusive approaches in livestock development. Dr Humera and Dr Haroon spoke about the conventional livestock setting in Pakistan and the interventions that the project undertook to mitigate the challenges of smallholder farmers within Pakistan.

The objective of this role play was to highlight the farmer challenges of dairy/beef and sheep/goat farming. Then how traditional farm advisory services by various organisations (govt, private, NGO and research organisations) are impacting overall farm production and then how these can be improved using whole family extension approach.

Dr David highlighted the challenges of smallholder farmers and importance of finding local solutions. Project team also set up stalls based on the themes according to the project objectives and all the participants visited the stalls. At the end Dr Talat Naseer Pasha appreciated the project team for their great contribution to improving the livelihood of the smallholder farmers.

5-Days training on “In-service Competency Enhancement Programme for Teachers” complete at UVAS

Lahore, May 20, 2022 (PPI-OT):The Center for Educational Policy and Administration (CEPA) of the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences Lahore organised a five days training of “In service Competency Enhancement Programme for Teachers” here in UVAS Veterinary Academy.

Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Nasim Ahmad presided over the concluding session of the training and distributed certificates among participants and resource persons while Chairperson Department of Anatomy and Histology Prof Dr Hafsa Zaneb, Training Coordinator Dr Saima Ashraf, Dr Ali Hamza, Ms Amina Chughtai and 28 participants of training from different campuses of UVAS were presents.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof Dr Nasim Ahmad advised teachers to take ownership of students for imparting education, research work and providing services to stakeholders with adoption of latest methodology of teaching which requires fulfilling international standards. He stressed on the importance of collective work like a team to enlighten the bright name of institution as well as producing trained graduates.

He lauded UVAS teachers who are performing excellent in teaching and playing vital role in the uplift of veterinary profession. He said it is necessary for all teachers to learn UVAS ordinance, Punjab Procurement Regulatory Authority (PPRA) rules and statutory bodies of university role and working. Prof Dr Hafsa Zaneb presented the vote of thanks. The participants of training thanked UVAS VC Prof Dr Nasim Ahmad and Chairman CEPA Prof Dr Habib-ur-Rehman who provided opportunities of learning for latest methodology of teaching to young in-service teachers.

During five days training various aspects have been discussed related to academics roles and responsibilities, andragogy (how students learn), constructive alignment of teaching and learning activities, student assessment (summative, formative feedback, assessment tools and associated challenges), personal conduct in professional settings, assessment quality, reflective practice, gender sensitive communication with students and colleagues, microteaching and UVAS ordinance etc.

Hands-on learning on ‘Dairy Laboratory Analysis Skills’ and ‘Entrepreneurship in Dairy Industry’ concludes at UVAS

Lahore, May 20, 2022 (PPI-OT):The Department of Dairy Technology of the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS) Lahore in collaboration with Livestock and Dairy Development Department Punjab (L and DD) under the project of ‘Capacity Building of dairy farmers and industry stakeholders on milk value chain’ organised combined concluding ceremony of five days and three days hands-on learning on ‘Dairy Laboratory Analysis Skills’ and ‘Entrepreneurship in Dairy Industry’ here at UVAS.

Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Nasim Ahmad chaired the concluding ceremony and distributed certificates among participants while Prof Dr Saima, Quality Head Yum Group Mubeen Arshad Awan, Project Director Dr Muhammad Junaid and 32 participants/professionals from both trainings, livestock farmers from public and private sectors dairy industry were present.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof Dr Nasim Ahmad said that such trainings are the best source of shearing knowledge and learning innovative from each other experiences. He said sustainable model in term of funding to make this successful project.

During these trainings experts talked about various aspects related to modern dairy farming, practices with hygiene milking, modern practices in mini-dairy processing laboratory, milk components for evaluation, texture analyzer/viscometer analysis of milk, milk sampling and analysis, adulteration and its impact on consumer in dairy industry, vegetable fat determination in milk, establishment a small dairy unit, dairy processing and entrepreneurship, latest trends in dairy value chain, economics importance of livestock disease, dairy cattle welfare, dairy supply chain risk and its implications and farm business techniques etc.

UVAS holds training on ‘Professional Skill Development for Graduating Students’ 

Lahore, May 19, 2022 (PPI-OT):The Institute of Biochemistry and Biotechnology (IBBT) of the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences Lahore organised a day-long “Professional Skills Development for Graduating Students” here on Thursday. Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Nasim Ahmad presided over the inaugural session of the training workshop while IBBT Director Prof Dr Waseem Shahzad, Organizing Secretary Dr Maryam Javed and a number of students and faculty members were present.

Addressing the audience, Prof Dr Nasim Ahmad urged students to learn competency in and skills for drafting resume (CV), communication skills and time management. He said criticism is key to polishing one’s abilities if one takes it as positive. Prof Dr Waseem Shahzad said that IBBT is providing ample opportunities of learning and skills enhancement to students and preparing them for their professional life. He also spoke about the training objectives. The main objective of this training was to provide the young graduates with the first-hand knowledge about job quest, communication skills, resume drafting, higher education resources and scholar opportunities, etc.

Ziauddin University Karachi seeks UVAS collaboration to initiate veterinary degree programme 

Lahore, May 19, 2022 (PPI-OT):Vice-Chancellor Ziauddin University Karachi Prof Dr Syed Irfan Hyder visited the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences Lahore, called on Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Nasim Ahmad and sought UVAS collaboration to initiate veterinary degree programme at his university.

Director Advance Studies and Research Board Prof Dr Sarwar Khan, Prof Dr Rana Ayub, Prof Dr Asim Khalid and other faculty members and officers were present. Speaking on the occasion, Prof Nasim said that UVAS has always been focusing on enhance technical skills of its graduates and playing a vital role in the development of livestock, poultry, dairy and food industries by using their knowledge and skills as a human resource. He said that UVAS is providing ample opportunities of entrepreneurship to its young graduate. He said that UVAS will provide technical assistance to the Ziauddin University to initiate DVM degree programme at the Ziauddin University. Earlier, he also spoke about the history of UVAS, various degree programmes, research, training and services of UVAS.

During the meeting, Dr Syed Irfan Hayder sought suggestions and technical input from UVAS senior faculty members to initiate veterinary degree programme at his university. Various areas of collaboration between the two universities related to food processing, value edition, packaging technology, marketing and networking to sell farmers’ products on good rates to enhance their profitability were discussed during the meeting. Dr Rana Ayub spoke about the role of Center for Applied Policy Research in Livestock (CAPRIL) for the preparing of policy paper to solve livestock issues and way forward to the government.

Later, Prof Dr Syed Irfan Hyder also visited various departments of UVAS Ravi Campus Pattoki including Milk Plant, Central Laboratory Complex, Small Ruminant Farm, Clinics, Dairy Training and Research Center and Prof Dr Akram Educational Complex, etc.

UVAS arranged ‘All Pakistan Declamation and Parliamentary Debating Championship 2022’

Lahore, May 18, 2022 (PPI-OT):The Debating Society of the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences Lahore in collaboration with Senior Tutor Office organized a four day ‘All Pakistan Declamation and Parliamentary Debating Championship 2022’ at City Campus Lahore.

More than 150 students from various public and private sector educational institutes of Pakistan (Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Gujrat, Okara, Faisalabad, Jhang, Pasrur) participated in this event. Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Nasim Ahmad chaired the concluding ceremony and shields and trophies among winners of various rounds while Chief Executive Officer Forward Solution Animal Health Company Dr Asim Mahmood Khan, Principal Officer City Campus Prof Dr Kamran Ashraf, Convener Debating society Prof Dr Asim Aslam, Senior Tutor Prof Dr Ali Raza Awan and a large number of students were present.

Winning institutions were Government College University Lahore (GCU), University of Punjab (PU), SIASA school system and University of Gujrat (UOG). Addressing the audience, VC Prof Dr Nasim Ahmad appreciated the efforts of organizing committee and congratulated the winners of the event.
