UVAS (Anti-Drug Tobacco Committee) holds virtual seminar in connection with ‘International Drug Abuse Day’ 

Lahore, June 26, 2021 (PPI-OT):The Anti-Drug Tobacco Committee (ADTC) of the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS) Lahore in connection with the ‘International Drug Abuse Day’ organized an online seminar to create awareness among students about issues related to drugs and strengthening action and cooperation to make the world free of drug abuse.

 

UVAS Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Nasim Ahmad presided over the online seminar while Director Counselling Program Willing Ways/Founder of Wellness hive Ms Uzma Sadaqat, Convener Anti-Drug and Tobacco Committee/Chairperson Department of Anatomy and Histology Prof Dr Hafsa Zenab, Senior Tutor Associate Prof Dr Ali Raza Awan, Associate Senior Tutor Faiz Rasool and a large number of student proctors were joined through video link.

 

While addressing the participants of the seminar, Prof Dr Nasim Ahmad said that we try our level best with strictly monitoring to make UVAS all campuses smoke and drug free and for this purpose with the cooperation of students proctors make strengthen Anti-Drug Tobacco Committee (ADTC). He also appreciated the organizer of the seminar to arrange seminar on informative topic and also for the noble cause.

 

Ms Uzma Sadaqat delivered a motivational lecture to UVAS student proctors to tackle this menace of drug abuse in youth. She spoke about the various aspects and situations of drug addiction, different mantel map, drug prevention and management, identifying harms from drug use, addiction risk factors and protective factors for drug and behave of drug addicted peoples etc. She also spoke about various steps way forward for the prevention of drug in youth through launching awareness campaign, counselling through informative seminar/lectures organize in university campus, impose penalties/punish and display different pamphlet with slogan “Say No to Drug” and “Smoking is injurious for Health” to keep youth young students away from drugs.

 

Prof Dr Hafsa Zenab said that UVAS students/proctors and teachers would play their key role as an ambassador to disseminate the objectives of Anti-Drug Tobacco Committee in sensitizing community regarding the harmful effects of drug use to save young generation. Dr Ali Raza Awan said that now a days some peoples are using drug to boost their potential/abilities but infect drug harmful impact destroy their immune system even made them mentally ill.

UVAS arranges post-budget dialogue focusing livestock sector (especially poultry, dairy and meat)

Lahore, June 24, 2021 (PPI-OT):University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS) Lahore arranged a ‘post-budget dialogue focusing livestock sector’ in which representatives from poultry, dairy and meat industries and senior university faculty discussed the budget implications especially on poultry, dairy and meat sectors here on Thursday.

UVAS Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Nasim Ahmad and Vice-Chancellor University of Education Lahore Prof Dr Talat Naseer Pasha co-chaired the session. The dialogue participants recommended that dairy, poultry and meat should be included in the zero rated sectors with focus on reducing the input cost of livestock related businesses. It was demanded that the general sales tax and duties concessions enjoyed by agriculture sector should also be extended to the dairy, meat and related industries in true letter and spirit. The participants also recommended enhancing import duty on skimmed milk.

At the same time a great concern was shown by poultry industry stakeholders that the government has started intervening in the price fixing of poultry/broiler meat which will have severe negative repercussions for this industry. The representatives from Pakistan Dairy Association stressed on the need for reverting back the increased sales tax on value added products which has been proposed to increase from 10% to 17%. They pointed out that heavy import duties/taxes on main feed ingredients are badly affecting the poultry feed industry of Pakistan.

Speaking on the occasion, UVAS Vice Chancellor Prof Nasim Ahmad said that UVAS was playing the leading role of a think-tank and is arranging such debates for the larger benefit of society. He also emphasized the impact of policy research papers produced by CAPRIL at UVAS Business School.

Prof Dr Talat Pasha emphasized on taking necessary steps to revive the poor farmer who is being crushed based on the fact that he is not being given due share out of long struggle of dairy farming. He emphasized that the UVAS Center for Applied Policy Research should extensively work on policy issues as torch bearer for livestock sector as a neutral actor.

Earlier UVAS Business School and CAPRIL Director Prof Dr Rana Muhammad Ayyub, explained the impact of the federal and Punjab budgets 2020-21 on dairy, poultry and livestock sector as a whole. He explained custom duties, subsidies and investment opportunities related to livestock sector in this budget.

Act as UVAS ambassadors, Vice-Chancellors urges foreign students

Lahore, June 23, 2021 (PPI-OT):University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS) Lahore Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Nasim Ahmad has urged the foreign students to play the role of an ambassador of the university and attract more students from their respective countries for getting education at UVAS.

Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Nasim Ahmad was chairing a meeting with the UVAS’s foreign students on Wednesday. Pro Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Masood Rabbani, Dean Faculty of Biosciences Prof Dr Habib-ur-Rehman, Chairman Department of Parasitology Prof Dr Kamran Ashraf and Treasurer Muhammad Umar were also present on the occasion. The UVAS foreign students are from Nepal, Somalia, Mauritius, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka and Benin.

The Vice-Chancellor advised the foreign UVAS students to work hard and prepare for a better and successful professional life. He also advised all students to strictly follow corona SOPs to curb the pandemic. He also sought suggestions from the foreign students to identify the areas needing any improvement in education.

Prof Dr Masood Rabbani sought guidance for enhancing education quality. Prof Dr Kamran Ashraf said that they are always available for the facilitating of students to resolve their issues while Prof Dr Habib-ur-Rehman said that it is the best time for all students to learn knowledge, skills and each other’s culture.

UVAS secures highest competitive research funding from PHEC

Lahore, June 21, 2021 (PPI-OT): The University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS) Lahore faculty members secured the highest research funding in the recent call for proposals announced by the Punjab Higher Education Commission (PHEC). Six faculty members from different departments of UVAS including Prof Dr Habib ur Rehman (Physiology), Prof Dr Aftab Ahmad Anjum (Microbiology), Dr Muhammad Nawaz (Microbiology), Dr Mian Abdul Hafeez (Parasitology), Dr Haroon Akbar (Parasitology) and Dr Muhammad Ijaz (Veterinary Medicine) won the competitive research grants of worth Rs 44.5 million.

While visiting UVAS, Chairman Punjab Higher Education Commission (PHEC) Prof Dr Fazal Ahmad Khalid cherished the UVAS faculty and committed to increase the research funding for universities in future. The Vice Chancellor UVAS also appreciated the dynamic UVAS faculty and ORIC and wished the faculty for the successful completion of the projects.

Earlier, UVAS held the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS) Lahore’s 1st meeting of the steering committee of the Office of Research Innovation and Commercialization (ORIC). Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Nasim Ahmad and Director National Feeds Limited Dr Musaddiq Asif co-chaired the meeting while Vice-Chancellor University of Education Lahore Prof Dr Talat Naseer Pasha, Prof Dr Kausar Abdullah Malik from FC College University, Dr Mustafa Kamal and a number of renowned academicians, industrialists and distinguished professors attended the meeting.

The committee members approved the five year strategic plan of ORIC and endorsed various initiatives like technology transfer support fund, entrepreneurial seed fund and establishment of Science and Innovation Club to promote research, innovation and commercialization activities at UVAS.

UVAS initiates Vets’ continued professional development training: 1st hallmark certification in South Asia

Lahore, June 18, 2021 (PPI-OT):The Faculty of Biosciences of the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS) Lahore initiated continued professional development (CPD) training and certification of veterinarians under the supervision of the Royal Veterinary Collage, University of London (UK). Seven UVAS faculty members completed this 6-month rigorous online training of Post Graduate Certification in Higher Education Learning and Teaching (HELT) under the supervision of Royal Veterinary Collage, UK, and this certification is first of its kind in South Asia.

Chairman Punjab Higher Education Commission (PHEC) Prof Dr Fazal Ahmad Khalid presided over the certificate-awarding ceremony and distributed certificates among the seven faculty members who completed their training and five RVC qualified tutors at the UVAS City Campus on Friday. Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Nasim Ahmad, Pro Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Masood Rabbani, Dean Faculty of Biosciences Prof Dr Habib-ur-Rehman, Chairperson Department of Anatomy and Histology Prof Dr Hafsa Zenab and faculty members were present.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof Dr Fazal Ahmad Khalid said that PHEC is willing to provide its full support to UVAS for such trainings. He lauded UVAS for arranging such a useful training programme for skills enhancement and professional development of its faculty. He said that PHEC also provides ample opportunities of learning, networking and research by conducting various short training programmers for universities professionals and vice-chancellors. He said it is direly needed to strengthen our education system by adopting innovative teaching methodologies to cope up the challenges. He urged the faculty members to do problem-solving research.

Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Nasim Ahmad spoke about various development projects, national and international linkages and UVAS achievements. He said that recently UVAS won six competitive research grants from the PHEC. He said that UVAS has been ranked in Times Higher Education World University Ranking and QS Top 16 University Ranking.

Prof Nasim appreciated the volunteer services of Prof Dr Tahir Yaqub and his team during COVID-19 and said that UVAS is contributing to the best of its capabilities to the efforts of the government in the fight against coronavirus. He acknowledged the support of PHEC for conducting professional development trainings.

Prof Dr Masood Rabbani said that UVAS is the leading institution for providing veterinary education in Pakistan and regularly updates its curriculum according to the modern day needs. Prof Dr Habib-ur-Rehman said that this certification programme is first of its kind in South Asia and is highly appreciated by the Royal Veterinary Collage. Prof Dr Hafsa Zenab spoke about the objectives of the training programme. The training focused on Veterinary Basic Sciences, Pharmaceutical Sciences and Nutrition Sciences.

UVAS Academic Staff Association office-bearers sworn-in

Lahore, June 17, 2021 (PPI-OT):The new office-bearers of the Academic Staff Association (ASA) of the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences Lahore were sworn in here on Thursday. Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Nasim Ahmad (SI) chaired the oath-taking ceremony and administered oath to the ASA office-bearers.

The newly elected office-bearers for 2021-22 are Prof Dr Aneela Zameer Durrani (President), Prof Dr Aamir Ghafoor Bajwa (Vice-President), Prof Dr Rana Muhammad Ayub (General Secretary), Dr Arshad Javid (Joint Secretary) and Dr Muhammad Junaid (Finance Secretary).

Speaking on the occasion, the Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Nasim Ahmad congratulated the new office-bearers and urged them to work for the welfare and development of the academic staff of the university. The Vice-Chancellor supported faculty welfare steps. He also lauded the efforts of UVAS faculty members and their services for the development of university. He said UVAS has been ranked in Times Higher Education World University Ranking and QS World Top University Ranking due to the collective efforts of university employee. Strictly follow corona pandemic standard operating procedures (SOPs) he added.

Earlier Prof Dr Aneela Zameer Durrani spoke about the welfare steps of the Academic Staff Association. She lauded the role of UVAS Academic Staff Association, Officer Staff Association OSA and Non-Teaching Staff Association NTSA and their contribution who are working day and night for the progress of the university. She said with the consultation of superior authority and other associations of UVAS would solve the welfare issues of ASA peacefully.

In oath taking ceremony Barrister Ms Nudra Abdul-Majeed spoke about the various aspects of human rights/duties for the uplift of any associations and hoped that during tenure ASA would perform its responsibility with full of dedication for the betterment of teaching staff. Pro Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Masood Rabbani said unity of the staff is the key way for the uplift of university while a large numbers of UVAS teaching and administrative staff members from all campuses were present on the occasion.
