Pakistan Red Crescent, religious scholars, and academia vow to promote climate change adaptation and mitigation

Karachi, March 13, 2023 (PPI-OT): The Pakistan Red Crescent (PRC) Sindh Branch with the support of German Red Cross (GRC) organized a stakeholder’s coordination meeting at Hotel Mehran Karachi on March 13, 2023, to discuss further activities in the ongoing second phase of the climate change adaptation program with various stakeholders, including religious scholars from different sects, academia, relevant government organizations and welfare organizations.

According to details, PRC-Sindh Provincial Secretary Kanwar Waseem thanked everyone for working together and said that the project’s first phase had been completed after a series of meetings and the signing of a joint declaration on climate change. “Now Pakistan Red Crescent is in the second phase of the Climate Change Program, and today we are here to discuss with our stakeholders about future activities through which we can effectively reach out to the public and preach the adaptation and mitigation measures to combat the negative effects of climate change in Sindh”, said the Kanwar Waseem.

Haji Muhammad Hanif Tayyab commended the PRCS for holding this follow-up meeting on climate change and said that the move showed the seriousness of the PRCS on the critical issue of climate change. Haji Maulana Tanveer-ul-Haq Thanvi and other scholars also vowed to perform their role effectively and create awareness among the people about the serious environmental issue. Professor Abid Raza Irfaani, Qazi Ahmed Noorani Siddiqi, Shayaan Shah, Akhlaque A. Qureshi, Zaffar Abbas and other participants also addressed the participants and share their opinion about climate change adaptation.

Ms. Iram Ayaz, Program Officer, also gave a presentation on the Climate Change Program’s planned activities, which included coordination meetings, reviews of sectoral policies and legislation, production of related awareness material, social media campaigns, and engagement of influencers to raise climate change awareness in Pakistan.

NorCross and PRCS work together to provide healthcare facilities to flood victims in Sindh

Karachi, March 06, 2023 (PPI-OT): The Pakistan Red Crescent Society, with Norwegian Red Cross (NorCross) Support, has initiated two Mobile Health Teams (MHT) performing outreach medical services in Jacobabad and Jamshoro @ Sehwan. These mobile health teams will help in restoring basic healthcare delivery and critical public health functions for the affected population, which has been cut off from essential health services.

 

MHT in Jacobabad was initiated on 2nd January 2023 and has reached out to 3379 beneficiaries in curative health services and 4624 beneficiaries in health awareness sessions. Meanwhile, MHT Sehwan has just started its operations in the flood-affected villages.

 

By far the most commonly seen health conditions include respiratory tract infections, malnutrition, and diarrhea and skin diseases. Along with the treatment and free medicines, these mobile health teams are conducting health awareness sessions in the community to raise knowledge of disease prevention, good hygiene, and health practices.

More than 350 female students join a two-day training camp

Karachi, February 28, 2023 (PPI-OT):Collaboration with Pakistan Red Crescent-Sindh and Sindh Boy Scouts Association (SBSA), Al-Abid Educational Society organized the second annual two-day field training camp for female students at Gulistan Scouts Ground in Karachi on February 27 and 28, 2023. Over 350 female students from across Karachi took part. The theme was “Sitaro se Agay Jahan or bhi Hai.”

According to a press release issued after the camp’s closing ceremony on Tuesday, February 28, the camp’s main purpose was to give confidence and encouragement to the female students to live in difficult conditions, such as in any emergency or disaster, and transform them from delicate to strong. All female students were placed into four companies named Fatima Jinnah Company, Rana Liaquat Ali Company, Bilquis Edhi Company, and Rutfaou Company to pay tribute to these iconic women.

Chairperson Pakistan Red Crescent-Sindh Mrs. Farzhana Naek was the Chief Guest at the closing ceremony. She appreciated the management of Al-Abid Educational Society for organizing the camp for female students. “I salute the parents of these students who allowed their children and encouraged them to participate in this camp,” said Chairperson Farzhana. She said that the Red Crescent conducted training sessions for the participants on camp management and rules, first aid, emergency response, climate change, and fire safety. In addition, a 24-hour first aid post was also set up to deal with any emergency.

Abid Pervaiz, President Al-Abid Educational Society, thanked all the partners who helped make the camp successful. He also expressed his gratitude to the Chairperson of Pakistan Red Crescent-Sindh and other guests for attending the closing ceremony. He further said that two-day training enhanced female students’ confidence and prepared them for emergency situations by providing them with first aid and scouting.

Talking to the audience, Syed Haider Ali, Chairman of the Sindh Private Schools and Colleges Association (ASPSCA), praised the organizers and said that the ASPSCA always encouraged schools and colleges to organize these events, especially for female students. Kanwar Waseem, Provincial Secretary of Pakistan Red Crescent Sindh also lauded all the female campers for their enthusiasm and interest in every activity in the camp. “The doors of the Pakistan Red Crescent are always open to the youth of our society,” he said.

Muhammad Saleem, General Secretary of Al-Abid Educational Society, and parents, school management and media also attended the closing ceremony. Later, teachers, school management, organizers, volunteers, company commanders, and camp management officers were awarded certificates and shields for rendering commendable services in the camp.

PRCS hands over consignment of medical supplies to Syrian Embassy for EQ victims 

Islamabad, February 22, 2023 (PPI-OT):Pakistan Red Crescent Society (PRCS) has provided relief consignment for the earthquake-affected population in Syria. On the instructions from Chairman PRCS, Sardar Shahid Ahmad Laghari, Secretary General PRCS, Muhammad Obaid ullah Khan handed over the relief consignment containing medical, surgical and first aid equipment to the Syrian Ambassador Dr. Rameez- Alraee in a ceremony held at PRCS National Headquarters here on Tuesday.

In his message on this occasion, PRCS Chairman Sardar Shahid Ahmad Laghari said that Red Crescent has stood by the side of Turkey and Syrian brethren in this time of trouble. He said PRCS has provided assistance to both the earthquake-affected countries and the supply of medical and surgical equipment is a practical response to the request from the Syrian Ambassador.

Sardar Shahid Ahmed Laghari said PRCS, as being a part of the Red Cross Red Crescent Movement, has planned to send teams of Paramedics, Health and WASH experts to help the earthquake victims and has shared the plan with the relevant authorities in this regard. He said that PRCS trained staff and volunteers would go to Syria and Turkey to contribute to relief activities, recovery and reconstruction efforts.

“PRCS has launched a nationwide appeal to help the earthquake victims of the two brotherly countries and any funds and donations being collected through the provincial branches would be handed over to Turkish Red Crescent and Syrian Arab Red Crescent to help the EQ victims”, he added.

Syrian Ambassador Dr. Rameez- Alraee appreciated the initiative of PRCS and said that the supply of medical and surgical equipment was much needed to help the earthquake victims in Syria. He thanked PRCS for the cooperation to mitigate the sufferings of the affected families. He also indicated all possible measures to strengthen these relations. It is pertinent to mention here that PRCS has previously donated 50,000 $ for Turkey earthquake victims and 25,000 $ for Syrian earthquake-affected population.

Chairman PRCS Sardar Shahid Ahmed Laghari met US Deputy Chief of the Mission H.E Andrew. J. Schofer in Islamabad

Karachi, February 10, 2023 (PPI-OT):Pakistan Red Crescent Chairman Sardar Shahid Ahmad Laghari met with Andrew J. Schofer, Deputy Chief of Mission of the US Embassy. Chairman PRCS briefed him about the measures taken for relief activities, restoration and reconstruction in the flood-affected areas. He further said that PRCS had helped more than 24 lahks flood-affected people all across Pakistan.

Chairman PRCS said that our resources are less, and the needs of the flood-affected population are way beyond our expectations. Pakistan Red Crescent has succeeded in rescue and relief operations in collaboration with its movement partners, but much work still needs to be done. Now we have reached the stage of rehabilitation and reconstruction. PRCS seeks help in cash grants, livelihood, public health, provision of dry ration, nutrition food and infrastructure construction.

The Deputy Chief of Mission of the US Embassy, ??Andrew J. Schofer, spoke about the ongoing relief work of USAID in the flood-affected areas. He said that Red Crescent’s services for the flood victims are commendable. He was also presented with a Red Crescent commemorative shield by Chairman PRCS Sardar Shahid Ahmed Laghari.

PRCS Chairman Calls on Chief of Naval Staff 

Karachi, February 10, 2023 (PPI-OT):Chairman Pakistan Red Crescent Society Sardar Shahid Ahmed Laghari called on Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Muhammad Amjad Khan Niazi. In the meeting, a detailed discussion was held regarding matters of mutual interest and relief work in the flood affected areas. The Naval Chief appreciated the services of PRCS and also indicated on joint relief work in the flood affected areas of the country.

Chairman PRCS briefed the Naval Chief about the ongoing relief operation in Pakistan. He said that so far Red Crescent has helped more than 2.4 million affected families and this process is still ongoing. He said that clean drinking water, household necessities, cash assistance, cooked food and hygiene kits have been provided by the Red Crescent and there are still 29 mobile health unit teams in the affected areas.

He said that two districts are still under water and PRCS will remain in the field until the last affected person is rehabilitated. PRCS Chairman Sardar Shahid Ahmed Laghari also extended the invitation to Naval Chief Muhammad Amjad Niazi to visit PRCS National Headquarters. On this occasion, commemorative shields were also exchanged from both sides.
