IBA Karachi sets new strategic direction at the Leadership Retreat 2022 

Karachi, July 01, 2022 (PPI-OT):IBA Karachi, steers into a new direction from being one of the leading business administration institutes to one of the best multidisciplinary institutes of higher learning in the country. IBA’s Retreat was held after the formation of three schools and the appointment of three permanent deans for each school.

The IBA Retreat 2022 was organized at Pearl Continental Hotel Karachi from June 28 -29, 2022 under the leadership of Dr. S Akbar Zaidi, Executive Director, IBA Karachi, who invited key stakeholders from IBA, along with prominent experts and strategists from academia, to participate in the development of IBA’s future vision.

IBA Karachi has gone through tremendous transformations to become a multidisciplinary teaching and research institution.

Three full-fledged schools have been formed – namely the School of Business Studies (SBS), School of Economics and Social Sciences (SESS), and School of Mathematics and Computer Science (SMCS) – a number of new degree programs have been launched; policy and regulatory frameworks have been put in place; various research and professional development centres have been established to cater to the emerging needs in order to adapt to the ever changing local and global dynamics.

The purpose of the Retreat 2022 was to remain abreast with the recent trends, ideas, while envisioning the role of the IBA in the socioeconomic development of the country and lay the foundation for a concentrated journey to achieve IBA’s vision.

The key pillars for the Retreat were identified as: meaningful and impactful research, innovation culture, alignment of academic programs with global trends and market needs, enhanced role of professional development centers, accreditations, quality faculty, academic/industrial linkages, and overall financial sustainability of the IBA.

The leadership aspect reflected upon the newly appointed full-time deans who will lead their respective schools on the academic and research fronts – enabled by a revamped Office of the Registrar which will provide administrative, technological and logistical support. Various steering and monitoring committees are in place to ensure accountability across the board.

The infrastructural and technological development side included, the solar energy project, faculty apartments, new girls’ hostel, state-of-the-art digital IBA project, and overall revitalisation of the campuses.

The event was attended by a large number of IBA faculty members, staff, senior leadership including Dr. S Akbar Zaidi, Executive Director; Dr. Asad Ilyas, Registrar; Dr. Wajid H. Rizvi, Dean, SBS; Dr. Abdullah Sheikh, Dean-elect, SBS; Dr. Asma Hyder, Dean, SESS; Dr. Shakeel Khoja, Dean, SMCS; and Dr. Maheen Ghouri, Dean, Student Affairs.

Dr. Tariq Banuri, former Chairman, Higher Education Commission; Dr. Syed Zahoor Hassan, Professor and former Vice Chancellor, Lahore University of Management Sciences; Dr. Jawad Syed, Professor, LUMS; Mr. Jawwad Farid, Chief Executive Officer, Alchemy Technologies; and Mr. Rami Awad, Regional Manager, QS Quacquarelli Symonds, also participated in the event and highlighted the future role of universities in the development of society and economy.

The participants appreciated the idea of setting up a long-term plan for the IBA and underscored the importance of holding such events in the future to monitor and ensure progress towards IBA’s future vision.

IBA-CEJ in collaboration with the U.S. Consulate organizes a two-day conference on ‘Extreme Reporting: Conflict and Peace in the Digital Age’

Karachi, June 29, 2022 (PPI-OT):The Institute of Business Administration (IBA), Center for Excellence in Journalism (IBA-CEJ) organized a two-day conference in collaboration with the U.S. Consulate General Karachi, titled ‘Extreme Reporting: Conflict and Peace in the Digital Age’.

Dr. S Akbar Zaidi, Executive Director, IBA Karachi and Ms. Amber Rahim Shamsi, Director, IBA- CEJ welcomed the participants at the conference. The keynote address was delivered by renowned journalist, Mr. Hamid Mir, while Mr. Khurram Dastgir Khan, Federal Minister for Power, was the Chief Guest at the closing ceremony.

The conference celebrated the works of journalists who participated in CEJ’s Peace Journalism training program but also took the opportunity to reflect on the threats to responsible journalism in the digital age. The winners of the Peace Journalism training program included, Ms. Mehreen Burney, Lok Sujag; Ms. Tayyaba Nisar Khan, PTV World; Ms. Afifa Nasar Ullah, Deutsche Welle, Mr. Kaleemullah, Lok Sujag; Ms. Faiza Gillani, Country News/Hum News; and Ms. Asmat Ali Akhun, Pakhtunkhwa Radio Swat Center.

Leading journalists and political figures were part of the various panel discussions that were held highlighting the issues faced by the media industry in the digital age.

Bank Alfalah held a cheque presentation ceremony to support deserving IBA students

Karachi, June 21, 2022 (PPI-OT):A cheque presentation ceremony was held at the Bank Alfalah Head Office as part of the MoU signed on July 10, 2020, between Bank Alfalah and the IBA, Karachi, to provide financial assistance to five undergraduate students under the ‘Alfalah Islamic Sponsorship Program’.

Mr. Atif Bajwa, Director and CEO Bank Alfalah, presented a cheque amounting to PKR 4.5 million to Dr. S Akbar Zaidi, Executive Director, IBA Karachi, to provide financial assistance to deserving underprivileged students, who demonstrate academic brilliance. Participants included Ms. Malahat Awan, Director ARC, IBA; and Dr. Muhammad Imran, Group Head, Islamic Banking Group, Bank Alfalah along with other senior management of Bank Alfalah.

Dr. Zaidi appreciated Bank Alfalah’s contribution and said, “We are grateful to Bank Alfalah Islamic for extending their support for students from our upcoming classes. Their generosity will help students and their families in this time of unprecedented crisis by enabling the gift of higher education and their better future, which represents an investment in a better future for all of Pakistan.”

SMCS in collaboration with ORIC organizes a two-day academic writing workshop 

Karachi, June 15, 2022 (PPI-OT):The School of Mathematics and Computer Sciences (SMCS), organized a two-day academic writing workshop in collaboration with the Office of Research Innovation and Commercialization, (ORIC-IBA). More than 40 participants attended the workshop, including MS and PhD Scholars, faculty members and management staff. The attendees were from all three departments: Mathematical Science, Computer Science, and Data Science. The two-day activity aimed to enhance the writing skills of early researchers and MS/PhD scholars and to help them understand the efficient usage of scholarly sources in their research and learn to think critically while reading and writing.

Dean, SMCS, Dr. Shakeel Khoja, in his closing remarks, thanked the resource person, Ms. Maria Hassan Siddiqui, Assistant Professor and Academic Director, Ardeshir Cowasjee Writing Centre, for her services. He also thanked the participants for their attendance and emphasized the scholars to focus on academic writing in their MS and PhD. The workshop concluded with certificates distribution to the participants and the organizers.

SBS delegation attends AACSB Accreditation Conference in Singapore

Karachi, June 11, 2022 (PPI-OT):A delegation from School of Business Studies (SBS), IBA attended the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), Asia Pacific Accreditation conference at Singapore Management University. The conference provided a great opportunity to engage with the best business schools from the Asia Pacific region to discover best practices, innovations and alignment with AACSB standards.

The 3-day conference featured insightful sessions and exchange of ideas and actions on agendas including, Creating Positive Societal Impact, Societal Impact of Intellectual Contributions, Global Partnerships to pave the way for higher education, 2020 AACSB standards, Technology Innovation post Covid era and Preparing Learners for a New Workforce Era.

The IBA delegation also held a meeting with Geoff Perry, EVP and Global Chief Membership Officer and Managing Director, Asia Pacific, AACSB International; Stephanie Bryant, EVP and Global Chief Accreditation Officer, AACSB International; and Amy Memon, Regional Head, South Asia, AACSB International. The meeting’s agenda was to discuss the progress of IBA-SBS and ways to track towards achieving the coveted AACSB Accreditation. The AACSB has accepted the Initial Self Evaluation Report (ISER) submitted by the IBA-SBS in February 2022, leading to the onset of implementation of rigorous plans for continuous improvement in all domains and an enhanced societal impact.

Department of Computer Science organizes its first academic meet-up

Karachi, June 08, 2022 (PPI-OT):Department of Computer Science, School of Mathematics and Computer Science (SMCS), IBA, organized its first academic meeting. The aim of the meeting was to focus on improving the department’s pedagogy and curriculum for the undergraduate program of Bachelor of Science (BS) Computer Science. The meet-up reflected on the previous academic year’s teaching, research, services, and challenges. The faculty members also identified the areas of improvement in the BSCS program and gave suggestions to streamline the curriculum.

Dr. S Akbar Zaidi, Executive Director, IBA Karachi, also attended the meet-up and had an interactive session with the faculty. He expressed his views on the importance of evolving technology and the scope of computer science, industry-academia linkages at school level, and emphasized on preparing students for the local and international industry, as well as for graduate studies. Dr. Zaidi appreciated the overall efforts of the SMCS and the CS department and underscored the importance of holding such activities in the future for continuous development.
