Karachi: Sindh Madressatul Islam University (SMIU) celebrated Pakistan’s Independence Day with a series of activities reflecting national pride and a commitment to educational excellence. The event featured an Azadi Walk, led by Vice Chancellor Dr. Mujeeb Sahrai, and involved the participation of university faculty, staff, and students.

According to Sindh Madressatul Islam University, the celebration took place on the historic grounds of the university—an alma mater of Pakistan’s founder, Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah. The day was marked by a flag hoisting and cake cutting ceremony, followed by the Azadi Walk, which drew significant participation from various departments within the university.

In his address, Vice Chancellor Sahrai highlighted the importance of loyalty and dedication to the nation and the role of education in achieving economic stability and independence from foreign loans. He stressed the necessity of improving primary education as a foundational step towards building a prosperous future for Pakistan. Citing the financial turnaround at SMIU under his leadership, Dr. Sahrai advocated for financial prudence and self-reliance across Pakistani institutions.

The event also included speeches and performances that underscored the significance of the day. Dean Dr. Zahid Ali Channar spoke about Pakistan’s economic history, while lecturer Syeda Nazia Ashraf and student Taqleed contributed with a national song and a speech on the importance of Independence Day, respectively.

The Vice Chancellor also participated in a plantation drive, emphasizing environmental responsibility alongside educational and fiscal stewardship. This initiative was part of a broader effort by SMIU faculty to promote sustainability and progress within the university.
