Punjab University Seminar Sheds Light on Jammu and Kashmir’s Political Landscape

Lahore, The Centre for South Asian Studies (CSAS) at the University of the Punjab, Lahore, conducted an insightful seminar on the societal and political dynamics of Jammu and Kashmir. Dr. Serena Hussain, a prominent academic from Coventry University, UK, was the guest speaker at the event held on April 22, 2024.

According to University of The Punjab, Dr. Hussain offered an in-depth examination of Jammu and Kashmir’s geographical and ancient historical context, its people, and the political movements that have shaped the longstanding conflict in the region. She brought attention to the declaration made by former U.S. President Bill Clinton in 2000, labeling Kashmir as one of the most dangerous places on earth, a situation that has continued to intensify over the years.

Highlighting Kashmir’s critical position among three nuclear powers—India, Pakistan, and China—Dr. Hussain emphasized the need to understand the significance of the region from the perspectives of its indigenous people. The seminar also delved into recent developments, notably the abrogation of Article 370, and discussed its profound implications for the local populace and the wider regional stability.

Dr. Hussain’s work, including her book “Society and Politics of Jammu and Kashmir,” was cited as a valuable resource offering unique local insights into the complexities of the area, aimed at a global audience. The event saw participation from faculty members as well as undergraduate and postgraduate students from various disciplines.

The Director of CSAS, Prof. Dr. Naheed S. Goraya, extended gratitude to Dr. Hussain and presented her book during the event, marking an important academic exchange on a globally pertinent issue.
