LAHORE: Punjab University Centre of Excellence in Molecular Biology (CEMB) has entered into two key agreements to bolster agricultural research and innovation in Pakistan. The agreements, signed by Punjab University Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Muhammad Ali, are designed to advance the development of improved cotton and hybrid crop varieties.
According to University of the Punjab, the first agreement involves collaboration with the Pakistan Central Cotton Committee (PCCC) and the Central Cotton Research Institute (CCRI) in Multan. This partnership aims to enhance cotton productivity through advanced research and breeding strategies. The signatories of this agreement include Dr Muhammad Idrees Khan, Secretary of PCCC, and Dr Sabahat Hussain, Director of CCRI.
The second agreement was signed with Gene Tech Lands, represented by its CEO, Dr Jilal Idrees. This collaboration focuses on the development of hybrid crop varieties, specifically cotton and maize, utilizing modern biotechnological approaches. The initiative seeks to promote sustainable agricultural development in the country.
The signing ceremony was witnessed by key figures from CEMB, including Director Prof Dr Moazur Rahman, Prof Dr Bushra Rashid, Prof Dr Abdul Qayyum Rao, Dr Allah Bakhsh, and Mr Muhammad Ejaz, Head of Administration at CEMB. These agreements are viewed as important steps in fostering collaboration between academia and industry.
