KARACHI: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Karachi General Secretary, Arslan Khalid, has issued a scathing critique of the current government's foreign borrowing practices, accusing it of economic mismanagement. According to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, Khalid claimed that the government has resorted to borrowing from every available international bank, exposing what he describes as the administration's economic incompetence through recently surfaced documents.

In his statement, Khalid highlighted that the government has accumulated $16 billion in foreign loans within a year, comparing this to pushing Pakistan into a financial quagmire. He criticized the government for amassing 4,517 billion rupees in debt, arguing that this has severely weakened the national economy. He further stated that the government took over $4 billion in loans in June 2026 and accused it of yielding to the demands of the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank (ADB), and the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Khalid labeled the government's decision to acquire $1.90 billion in commercial loans from trade banks as a "criminal act" and noted an additional $3 billion burden from the Naya Pakistan Certificates. He questioned the allocation of $12.72 billion from non-project loans, arguing that such extensive debt usage is unprecedented in Pakistan’s history and indicative of a lack of economic strategy.

Khalid also expressed concern about the $7 billion IMF program, suggesting it burdens the public while the government depends on foreign loans for its expenditures. He compared Pakistan's economic plight to global geopolitical tensions, stating that the debt issues are more alarming than Russia's actions in Ukraine. Khalid vowed accountability for those he believes are leading the country towards economic instability.
