Islamabad: President Asif Ali Zardari has called for a stronger partnership between Pakistan and the United Nations, focusing on sustainable development, climate change, poverty alleviation, education, and social protection. The statement was made during a meeting with Mohamed Yahya, the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Pakistan, who met with the President for a farewell discussion at Aiwan-e-Sadr.

According to Pakistan Peoples Party, President Zardari highlighted Pakistan’s appreciation for its collaborative efforts with the UN and reaffirmed the commitment to working alongside the UN Country Team to advance national development goals. He acknowledged the UN's continued support in areas such as polio eradication and maternal, newborn, and child health and nutrition services, with special mention of the Benazir Nashonuma Programme.

The President also recognized the efforts of the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in coordinating international humanitarian assistance during significant climate-related disasters. He reiterated Pakistan's dedication to sustainable development and addressing climate change impacts, citing initiatives like the Living Indus Initiative and Recharge Pakistan. He expressed hope for ongoing UN support in mobilizing development and climate finance and confidence in continued progress under the UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework 2023-27.

During the meeting, Mr. Yahya shared his appointment as Assistant Secretary General for OCHA, expected to commence in September 2026. President Zardari congratulated him on his new role and assured him of Pakistan's full support.
