PCB Launches Nationwide Fitness Tests Across 104 Districts to Bolster Grassroots Cricket

Lahore: In a groundbreaking move to enhance the physical fitness of cricketers at the grassroots level, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has initiated fitness tests across 104 districts, covering all 16 regions of the country. This first-of-its-kind endeavor aims to integrate a robust fitness culture among over 2,300 cricketers participating in the tests.

According to Pakistan Cricket Board, this initiative, which is part of PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi’s vision, involves rigorous fitness and strength assessments. These tests are a precursor to selecting players for the upcoming Regional Inter District Senior Tournament for the 2024-25 season. The selected players from the fitness tests, 23 from each district, were previously shortlisted through the Challenge Cup held in April and May 2024.

These athletes are currently under the supervision of district and regional coaches and trainers, ensuring that only the fittest make it to the 45-day training camps scheduled in their respective districts. These camps will serve as the final preparation phase before the main tournament in September.

Abdullah Khurram Niazi, Director of Domestic Cricket Operations at PCB, emphasized that shifting the fitness assessments to the district level would encourage players to prioritize their physical health from the early stages of their careers. This strategic shift is expected to elevate the quality of cricket across domestic competitions by fostering a competitive environment filled with well-prepared and physically fit players.
