Karachi: The General Secretary of the Pasban Democratic Party, Iqbal Hashmi, has called for urgent action to harness and conserve rainwater in Pakistan, criticizing the current mismanagement which he claims turns potential blessings into national losses.
According to Pasban Democratic Party, Hashmi stressed the dire need for effective rainwater management strategies to address the declining underground water levels, a trend observed globally and now affecting Pakistan. He remarked that the unchecked flow of rainwater into the sea each year represents a substantial national loss, emphasizing the importance of rainwater for both consumption and agriculture, which sustains seventy percent of Pakistan’s population.
Hashmi highlighted the escalating issues of water scarcity and pollution within the country’s existing water bodies, where despite significant financial allocations for water purification, the quality remains substandard and poses health risks. He proposed the construction of small dams to mitigate water overflow and suggested that the adoption of modern irrigation technologies and the planting of trees could improve both water availability and the overall climate.
Furthermore, Hashmi advocated for legislative measures against water wastage and emphasized the importance of developing infrastructure to store flood and rainwater, mirroring practices in developed countries. He pointed out that several nations meet their water needs entirely through rainwater conservation, suggesting that Pakistan could significantly benefit from similar initiatives.
