New York: The high-level parliamentary delegation of Pakistan, led by Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Chairman of the Pakistan People’s Party and former Foreign Minister, met with the United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres at the UN Headquarters today. The meeting was part of Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts in response to recent Indian military actions and regional tensions.
Mr. Bhutto presented a letter from Pakistan’s Prime Minister to the Secretary-General, lauding his efforts in advocating for restraint and diplomacy. He briefed Mr. Guterres on Pakistan’s stance following the Pahalgam attack on April 22, 2025, rejecting India’s allegations against Pakistan due to a lack of credible evidence.
The former Foreign Minister highlighted India’s military actions, which he claimed endangered regional stability by targeting civilians and disrupting the Indus Water Treaty. He emphasized Pakistan’s commitment to international law and the UN Charter amid these provocations.
Mr. Bhutto warned against India’s attempts to normalize unilateral military actions, which could escalate into a broader conflict in the nuclearized region. He called on the Secretary-General to facilitate dialogue and restore the Indus Waters Treaty, especially concerning the Jammu and Kashmir dispute.
The delegation also highlighted the humanitarian impact of suspending the Indus Water Treaty, describing India’s actions as unprovoked aggression. Secretary-General Guterres expressed the UN’s interest in maintaining peace and diplomacy in the region and reiterated the UN’s commitment to supporting de-escalation and peaceful dispute resolution.
Mr. Guterres assured the delegation that the UN remains engaged in promoting stability in South Asia, supporting efforts to reduce tensions and resolve disputes.
